New toy - anti-woodpecker home defense pew pew

Just got this in the mail couple days ago. Was going to sight it in this weekend, but rained all day today and supposed to continue through at least Saturday night....

 

Illegal to kill woodpeckers. That would be a Federal crime under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

 

There's always someone to jump in and rain on somebody's parade.

Fine will be more expensive than fixing a few holes.

 

A blue heron just ate all the fish in my pond, 30-40 fish. The fish were unable to defend themselves due the bird being protected.

 

Those fuckers act like they own my pier!

 

Think how the woodpeckers feel, somebody built a house in the middle of my woods.
There are plenty of ways to deter woodpeckers other than killing them, probably not as fun. I have a lot of them around my house. One major attraction for them is cedar siding and trim, they chase the little worm holes in the wood looking for worms that ain’t there

 

My house was built on a former swamp. There were never tress here! They sure like my house though.

 

I know it’s frustrating, worked for a high end builder for years. They had a field day on all those McMansions. Good money maker for the service department. Everyone wants to live in the middle of nature without all the icky nature stuff.

 

I live in the middle of a city though!

 

There are stains and paint that will deter them. I’m sure glad chipmunks, moles, and woodchucks aren’t protected. I go full “Pulp Fiction “ on those little bastards.

 

Hmmmm... I need to find out more about those stains and paint!

There's a chance the peckers are telling you you have bugs..

 

Woodpeckers also like to make noise on stuff during mating season. Metal light poles and metal roofs, aluminum gutters....

 

I'm that way with the dreaded armadillos!

As an old weathered woodsmans had been brought in on a felony charge for shooting an indangered woodpecker he stood silently. He then slowly stepped forward and approached the judge to enter a plea, "have mercy" he pleaded.

The judge responded. "Now you know shooting a endangered animal is wrong don't you?'

"Yes your honer,... but I haven't had work and my family is starving."

The judge took pity on the poor mans plight and released him with no penalty. As the judge gave him his final scolding he leaned over and quietly asked. "I always wondered what a woodpecker tasted like?"

The man thought for awhile and slowly answered " somewhere between a Bald Eagle and a rare albino Owl."

I have a similar issue with wood boring bees.

I use the air gun as a muzzle loader. Rod down a paper wad (lightly), then pour in about 12 grains of cous cous, then cap it with another small wad of tissue paper.

Tough buggers to hit on the fly, I usually wait until they are hovering in front of some hole. ;-)
