Over pressure will trigger it, I've done it and it's stated in the manual. Follow the reset procedure, not just hitting the button for 1 or 5 seconds--read the manual. I don't recall the procedure but believe it's a two or three step process. I had to do this when I started running higher pressure, and even then after a long high speed run in warm weather I'll occasionally get a blinking light for a little while 'till the tires cool. Your spare tire has a sensor too so make sure it's up to pressure. You don't need to change the sensors with every tire change. If you wear the tires out it makes sense to do them along with tires as they'd likely be close to the end of their battery lives. If you do a reset and it's still on then maybe the guy damaged one while doing the tires and you need to get back there asap to hopefully get them to pay for it.

Wow, this whole tpms has so many scams that came with it. I've had several vehicles now with tpms and all of them have had at the least one set of tires replaced, if not wheels also. Never have had one problem or had to spend any extra money because of the tpms. I've also rotated tires myself and no light came on after.

Op, if your not low on air, the tire guy f'd it up, from what I've heard it doesn't take much of a hit to break them.

Fwiw, I also didn't have to pay any extra to have the tpms switched over to the methods on my 13, although I used a specific shop for my wheels/tires and have done so for many years now. That may have something to do with it.

It's pretty simple to break a TPMS sensor when changing a tire. Typically if the pressure is off the light will be solid. If there is an issue with the truck reading the sensors it will flash. Sounds to me like someone F-ed yours up.

Too high of pressure will set the light off, but the threshold is larger than if the tire is too low. IE being 10 PSI high may set it off, while being 4 PSI low may set it off.

For a while they were putting TPMS in the spare, but now (or at least, in 2011 and 2012) they only put them in the four driving wheels.

Also 45psi is too high - you'll get great gas mileage but you'll wear out the center of your tires early and that'll cost you more money than the gas you saved. Search the site for 'chalk test' but most tacomas end up settling some where roughly around factory standard pressure - as the right pressure is determined more by the weight of the truck, than the style of the tire.

I assume the spare is 30, as its still a rugged terrain. Don't know, I pressed it at length, still on, not really a big deal but.. Tire guy is usually good, says they're ok but maybe I just need to take down to 42-43 lbs. Ill read the man.

YeaH Ive heard of the chalk test, was thinking that. Just surprised the tire guys recommendation isn't spot on; he was claiming best wear and mileage at 45, but maybe a bit too high.

    Reserected from the dead.
I deleted my sensors. The truck ECU is fooled into believing all sensors are good. My wheels don't even have sensors in them anymore. My dash light will never turn on and that's the way I want it.

It takes a couple of resistors and a soldering iron to do the mod.

So much misinformation in this thread! Doesn't anyone read the manual anymore for christs sake they printed an owners manual just for you.

He has a new truck and there is no sensor in the spare tire. They stopped that about 2008 or so..

To reset the TPMS as per Toyota:

    Reset Procedure;

    1. Park the vehicle in a safe place and turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position.

    2. Adjust the pressure of all installed tires to the specified cold tire inflation pressure level.

    3. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.

    4. Push and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch until the tire pressure warning light blinks slowly three times.

    5. Leave the system with the ignition switch in "ON" position for a few minutes, and then turn the ignition key to the "LOCK" position.

You said that it was flashing:

When the vehicle is started, the light should illuminate for three seconds and go out if the system is functioning normally. If the light stays on, it means that the system has detected a low tire. The inflation of all the tires (sometimes including the spare) should be checked.

If the light flashes for one minute after the ignition is turned on or continues to flash, it is a sign the system has a malfunction that needs to be diagnosed. On some models, the frequency and length of the flashes can be used to diagnose a problem.

If you push the button while the vehicle is moving, initialization is not performed.

Hey, no problem. Facts. 09 Base tacoma, did all service myself for 30k, rotated many times, 3 sets of tires. Stock no issues. Set of used 235/70-15 installed by random shop, tpms went off once, low pressure. Shop had pulled inside valve stem to release air and didn't tighten enough. Set of new same size tires installed at local shop, no issues.
13 Sport has had the tires rotated once at dealership, no idea if they did anything special after. Methods were put on at a custom shop that does all my aftermarket wheels stuff and tires were rotated again. Guy there could of possibly keep track of tpms and installed to keep in same location? I'm due for the first rotate on the methods, hope I didn't jinx myself. Frontier once, Titan new up to 100k, 350z, never rotated  no tpms issues.

I run 46 lbs in my BFGs. I seem to recall something about factory setting TPMS for higher PSI. I put 42 in Duratrcs on 2009 and no problems.

Thanks Jimmy, I know I didnt even check there, and I will. It blinks at first, then stays constant.

Stump JUmper- how long have you been running 46 lbs, and what size? Do you get good wear?

You can pressurize the tires to whatever pressure you want.

When you press the reset the TPMS goes into the teach mode and then drive it for a bit and it records the new setting as normal.

You should only need to reset the TPMS after a tire rotation if you have the front and rear tires set to different pressures.

I'm pretty sure you are correct, I didn't want to commit to a specific year. I was just sure it was well before 2011.

    Thanks for the confirmation.

Dafuq??? That is strange. I for sure did not put it on my spare. And O have been the only owner. I guess that someone at either discount or the stealership was feeling generous.

I doubt anyone gifted it to you. Looking at the valve stem should show if it has one or not. It may have become optional equipment instead of standard.
