So, if I have a new taco coming in a couple weeks.. what’s the first thing I do to protect the paint? Wax it? If so, what’s the best? Would you have a professional detail shop do it?

I would just leave it alone.
Wax deteriorates and causes more problems.
The rest of the stuff out there is mostly all gimmick.
    My opinion only!
Paint is a protective finish of it's own.

I waxed mine fairly soon after getting it. Most traditional waxes are pretty decent today. I used Maguire's

    Oh look, another mod....
So you want to upgrade the truck before you even get it? You're gonna fit in juuuuuuuuuuuuuuust fine on this site. Can I interest you in a lift? Larger tires and wheels? Maybe a steel bumper w/winch?

When I wash mine (maybe once a season) I use Nu-finish polish then hit it with Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic Spray.

    Ceramic.

I went with Opti coat pro-plus i can speak for. I basically drove the truck from the dealership to the detailer to get the Ceramic coating applied immediately after picking the truck up,. The pro plus is good for 7 years. Use a Little of their Opti coat Hyperseal after you hand wash and your truck looks like it was freshly waxed for literally years. Im 5 years on the coating and the paints as smooth as a babies skin and after 5 winters looks like i wax it regularly.

only thing i would do differently if it was a new truck is Get the 3m paint protection film put on roof above front windshield and in the front of the hood as well. Then get the opticoat applied.

    I'm fanatical about my detailing.

It depends how much work you want to put into it. You want to get a solid protection on it before contaminants can get onto your paint. Waxes are kind of outdated, lots of really good ceramic products out there. Here's what I did:
    1. wash
    2. clay bar: yes, I clay new paint. You will be shocked at how much smoother it gets.
    3. fine polish: dr. Beasleys NSP 150
    4. Gyeon Pure Evo. Lots of great other ceramics, carper cquartz, gtechniq, etc.

Again, I am fanatical but most fanatics will agree, get a solid coating on right away. You can also find shops that will put on really good coatings for $800-$1000 but it comes with pretty good warranties on the coatings. If you care for the coatings, they can last upwards of 3 years.

If you don't want to do all that then get Griots 3 in 1 ceramic spray wax. Its by far the best easy on ceramic wax out there. By far. it's amazing.

No need to protect the brand new truck imo. Drive it for a month or two, enjoy it. Then do a wash/clay/ceramic wax. It will take you a full 8 hours if your new too waxing, don't spend one of your first few weekends worrying about it or putting in the elbow grease.

There's that too, but damn if I let ANYTHING get in-between my new paint and the coating. Drove the truck home and next day was working on the coating.

Had my truck sent out before taking delivery for a professional glass coating which was another tern for ceramic. Imo, its the only way to go on a new vehicle. Still no paint chips either which my last truck seemed a magnet for.

Wax is dead. Ceramic coating is a smart move as it will be easier to clean, and dry, between washes. IGL is a bargain buy, but Gyeon and others are a good option. Have a pro do it if you are not Familiar with applications.
