The Outback Wilderness comes with a retractable roof rack similar to the Tacoma’s but can hold 700lbs but Toyota can only come up with a 100lb rated rack? I actually have the OEM rack and enjoy it for what it is but if it could hold anywhere near what’s the Subaru’s does then I’d be using it for a whole lot more.

Pretty sad a Subaru car can carry that much but a Toyota truck can only carry 100 pounds.

The Tacoma can carry more, but the OEM rack just isn't designed for a lot of weight. Yakima, I think goes to 180...then the modulars go higher. Though not many of them seem to post/commit to weight loads. The Sherpa I have holds 400 dynamic, 700 static - One of the reasons I chose it.

Their FAQ Page has this blurb:

Our rack systems are designed to support roughly 600LBS static and 300LBS dynamic. For example this equates to a standard roof top tent while on the trail and a few people in the tent when stopped.

*Sherpa is not responsible for failure due to improper use or loading. All load ratings are when evenly loaded and distributed across the rack. It is recommended that customers with hardshell tents distribute their load across 4 crossbars when installing.

Since the FAQ covers all their racks, I think it is more Marketing, not Engineering spaces. 8020 full extrusion, with 1/4" endplates and eight roof-mounted feet, should be fine for those loads.

The only manufacture that does the engineering loads and publishes an upfitter is Ford. Body & Equipment Mounting Manual (BEMM) is fantastic for those "what if questions" never mind often the sheet metal doesn't quite match up to the 8mm threaded holes (Dremel tool time) but made quick work so I knew what I the roof could support (100 pounds per cross brace, my big van had 6).

Mad props to Subaru for that spec, but if you need every inch of space when camping.

Very interesting! Though I’m sure it will sell well in the segment that wants a larger style Crosstrek with a turbo, but doesn’t want a full on 4Runner. Would make a great trip car that’s still somewhat capable.

I love our Subaru, and it actually makes the trek out to Colorado more often than the Tacoma does, mostly because of long distance ride comfort, vastly better MPG, and much less noise. But mostly because it’s a lot cheaper to drive.

I’ve got a basic roof rack on it and it does the job well for camping supplies.

But the only reason it’s needed, is because there’s no bed of course. When we take the Taco the bed gets crammed full of even more than the car holds. At least compared to the roof bag, there is more interior space in there vs the Tacoma, to it’s credit.

If I was a more serious traveler/off-roader I’d get one of those nifty bed racks or shell to carry more but it’s only a couple of times a year that we go and we’ve got a 2 year old an an infant. So we don’t get too off the beaten path yet. Maybe later in life though!

Nice - I'm looking to buy a new car for my daughter for (college) graduation...looking at the Crosstrek. It sounds like you like the vehicle.? I bought my mom a Forrester last year and that has turned out to be a nice little car.

We love it! It’s my wife’s car primarily and it’s the first new car she’s ever had after a long string of Craigslist beaters and one she got really upside down in from a dealer in the past that we got rid of. Bought it for 25K and it came via boat and rail (once in the US) right from Japan with 5 miles on it. Currently we’re just hitting the 36,000 mile mark and almost 3 years (purchased June 2018 when we were expecting our first child).

Nothing but regular maintenance so far and the little 2.0i has done just fine even up mountain passes fully loaded with that bag on top. CVT is the best I’ve driven and the paddle shifters let you select from one of 8 ratios to mimic a standard and hold low gears downhill.

The only complaint we’ve had has been entirely around the dang head unit. It’s slow, laggy, and buggy. Crashes, etc. We were able to get it replaced a few months ago since we’d had issues with it since day 1 and it’s better. But not great. Seems the CPU can’t quite keep up with the software running on it. Though CarPlay works pretty well to it’s credit.

It’s been up a few (4x4) places in Colorado and done superb for its vehicle class. Went up to Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride the last time we were there and Animas Forks. No prob even on the stock Yokohama tires it’s still rocking. Held up well for factory tires. Easily going to get 40K from them and we live off of a gravel road.

Thanks - I'm not that familiar with car audio...but I know music IS important to my daughter's, wife and even my son ( I pay for XM, Spotify and Apple Music - LOL). She is thinking she wants a Prius - but she will only drive short distances per week and I'm not certain it's the best ROI for that reason. I'm certainly glad you like it - sounds like overall it is a good vehicle for your needs. I certainly appreciate you replying with solid feedback. Enjoy and stay safe.

I thought about getting the OEM roof rack when I bought my Taco but decided against it. When I had a 4Runner it had a roof rack I used exactly twice. The last time is when I had the bright idea to strap the spare tire for my Dune Buggy (which I was flat-towing on a trip at that time) up there.

After having owned 81 dL wagon, 88 gl10 sedan, 88 justy, 01 outback, 16 WRX

I am not touching one again. I know tons of wrx bros move to tacos

but subaru 3rd tier quality - I have had enough. My iq is low so I was a glutton for punishment going back to subaru like an abused wife returning to her abusive husband

low interior quality, garbage motors, low overall build quality - no thanks fuji industries. Bye bye subaru

don’t care if I can carry an elephant on subaru roof - rather drive a lesbian Ridgeline - at least it’s higher quality

Now I'm scared, I'm literally a month away from installing a 2.5L Subaru engine in my VW Thing! Although the engine is being re-built by a local performance shop and should hopefully be solid. Finger's crossed! :burnrubber:

It's going to be difficult lifting something that weighs 700lbs as high as the roof.

The fender flares look like the ones that can be had on the Hilux, and the HPD Ridgeline.
