Okay guys , 2006 tacoma 4.0l auto trans , just replaced the neutral safety switch , got it adjusted as best as I could by myself , shift through all the gears fine all dash lights light up when you put them into the gear, 2 and low sometimes take a bit of playing but they will illuminate , but now more often than not when I put into D it doesn’t engage , have to shift down to 3rd and it kind of hammers into gear then shift back up to D to have it engage , any ideas ?

Update after driving home from work, it seems I have park, reverse , neutral , then drive is totally gone , truck needs to be shifted down to 3rd gear before I get any forward motion, then if I put in 4th or D it’s still clearly driving in a low gear , driving at very high Rpms to get home , the shaft and nss were lined up perfectly like the old one was. Anyway I jumped something in the tranny or any ideas ? Thanks in advance

The switch I have doesn’t actually have the neutral line on it for some reason but I aligned everything exactly how it was when the old one came off , brand new nss, I tried moving it around and tried 20 diff angles today and it’s just like D is totally gone , I’m at a loss , I do believe it’s driving 4th tho

It’s been awhile since I looked over the diagrams.

But best I can remember the the gears that you slide up/down. Are controlled by the NSS. The ones that slide left and right are controlled by the shift console.

Some where on this site there is a diagnostic for that too. I remember helping out in that one too.

Like I say, I’m not home. And do not have access to diag. But it sounds like the NSS isn’t working right. Best I remember 5th (D) is on the NSS.

Test the switch in the link above.

So does anybody know if there’s any chance the neutral safety switch could have anything to do with this code or not likely ?

    Not likely.

Here about as good as I can do.
This looks like a question for @gearcruncher (sorry buddy, hate to bother you. But I’m at loss on this one)

    MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM calculates the amount of heat absorbed by the friction material based on the difference in revolution (clutch slippage) between the turbine and output shaft. The ECM turns on the MIL and outputs this DTC when the amount of heat absorption exceeds the specified value.
When the shift solenoid valve SLT remains on, the oil pressure goes down and the clutch engagement force decreases.

NOTE: If driving continues under these conditions, the clutch will burn out and the vehicle will no longer be drivable.
