I do 10k oil changes on my 4.0 which is about every 5 months. When I was was only going 5k a year I would change once every 12 months. So for me personally I see no place for it. I get a case of regular Mobil 1 5w30 at BJ's for 26.99 (with a clipless coupon included normally 36.99) and I wait for the 15 buck rebate from Mobil. So for 25 dollars a year the plain Jane Mobil 1 does the trick as will any quality synthetic in my opinion. And I change my oil filter every 5k though.

It says Ultimate Full Synthetic. I wonder if that is replacing Extended Full Synthetic which claims good up to 15K. I will try it and submit an oil analysis sample to compare with Extended FS.

I did the 15k mobile 1 in my last truck with no problems but it was all highway miles. This seems excessive.

I saw some locally for $50 for 5 quarts. I'd rather use regular Mobil 1 and change twice as often for the same price personally.

Mobil 1 Extended oil filters are now rated to 20K. Amsoil oil filters have always claimed up to 25K or one year protection.

Warranty limitations per their product data sheet:

"Excluded service includes: commercial and racing applications; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or excessive idling. If your vehicle is covered by a warranty, follow the vehicle's oil life sensor or the oil change interval recommended in your owner's manual. Proper maintenance practices, including frequently checking the oil level to ensure that the appropriate amount of oil is present, are required to ensure effective performance."

"Additional requirements for all Mobil 1 Annual Protection products include:
    1. Oils must be put in service not later than five (5) years from the date of purchase; and
    2. An oil change must be completed every twelve (12) months or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
    3. The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter is recommended for extended oil change intervals and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1 Annual Protection Limited Warranty. When extending oil change intervals beyond your car manufacturer’s recommendation, always use a high quality oil filter designed for your intended oil change interval."

"Mobil 1 Annual Protection engine oils are recommended for all types of modern vehicles, including high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged, gasoline multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks."

Seems sketchy. Kinda like those medicine commercials. "This pill will fix this better than anything you've ever taken"
3 months later: "if you or a loved one has taken this pill and is on a deathbed or dead..."

    Please.

You have semi's that run 25-35K oil changes. Think our Tacomas will be okay.

True, but they are running many hours after each startup. True definition of highway miles. The problem with oil change intervals is that one blanket statement can't really cover all situations like short trips, stop and go traffic and the like.

A lot of vehicle manufacturers do once a year oil changes now. Mercedes recommends once a year oil changes and I can't imagine their engines so anything different that Toyota engines. Still uses gas and such to make the vehicle move.

That being said it really depends on miles driven, For me personally I change my oil with synthetic mobile 1 every 6 months and when I drain it, it looks just as clear as the oil I end up putting in. Granted I only drive about 3500 miles in 6 months, so I could probably go 1 year between oil changes. I have been debating doing oil changes every 9 months but I'd rather not be changing my oil in the middle of summer with 110 degree heat every few cycles. ( I change my oil on May 1 and Nov 1 of every year ).

Walmart super tech 5w30 dino every 5K. Good as any oil out there. Don't waste your money on snake oil.

yes I love my truck but it doesn't mean I like doing oil changes :D

and I like doing the oil changes myself rather than some high school kid who don't really give a damn about my vehicle at a oil change place.

so if they can prove that this Mobil 1yr oil combined with the 20k oil filter works just as good as the every 5k oil change, then im all for it. :broccoli:

I use the extended performance now as well. Am all for trying this next change and have it tested by Blackstone Labs.

What do you think try it for 15k miles and have a sample tested or change at 10k and test?

I can not imagine for one second that they have not tested this. I todays layer up sue happy world, they have done what is needed to ensure this is ok.

On the Semi comment about not doing stop and go, what do you think they do when they get to towns and need to drop a load, they stop and go just like the rest. Oh and I'm not sure how sitting idling for a few hours fits in the picture, but I would consider this part of the stop and go wear on an engine.

Semi's take a lot more oil and spin at lower revs. The argument is invalid for a number of reasons.

Yeah a Diesel engine brings many differences to the table as well so let's just stick to our Tacomas. I have no doubt the science is there to support going with that long of an interval. Personally it's not for me. I enjoy changing my oil twice a year. Fumoto means no tools required. Even good synthetic oil is cheap comparatively speaking. My 2 cents.

I use both Mobil 1 Full Syn and Mobil 1 Filters, but still change every 5k and have done so with all of my vehicles for many years.

Never once have I had an engine problem. For me, it's good preventative maintenance.
