Hello there. I was a long time 2003 Tacoma 4WD owner with the 2.7 engine. I loved that engine. I sold the truck after 13 years to get out of student loan debt that my wife had. I am about to get a new one and had some questions. Why did the 2.7 go from fixed valves to the variable valvetrain ? Also , is the newer 2.7 direct injection or still normal fuel injection ? And does it have a normal oil filter or the cartridge type ? Thanks for any help.

2.7 still has the spin on oil type.

Well I hate to hear the direct injection and the variable valves but I do like the regular oil filter. But it seems to be the most reliable truck on the market at this point in time so I guess it will be the one I pick. I still have an older Nissan before they were bought out by Renault. It has the 2.4 liter engine and still runs great but it's 21 years old and I would like AC , an automatic transmission , and a bigger bed.

You sure the 2TR Fe is direct? I’m pretty sure it’s port. I’m gonna try to find out on the interwebs.

Edit: it says it has sequential multi port fuel injection, so it has to be port injected then.

2.7 has 5 speed MT, OP. Just fyi. I wouldn’t get a 4 cyl without the manual, today. They’re just too clunky of a truck for that little motor and a soggy auto ha.

Correct. The 2016+ Tacoma’s are much more refined and capable then the previous generations were.

Mine drives fine, way more comfortable than my previous 2000, 2008, and 2015 Tacoma's.

I have a M/T. Mine drives just fine. I did test drive an Auto and it was fine too, though I only drove it 10 miles.
