I had a new Leer 100XR installed yesterday on my 2019 5' bed. The dealer did the install and he was highly recommended here locally. Initially it looked a little off to me, like it was sitting a bit far back on the bed. Got home and noticed it had already rubbed a little paint of the bed wall on the driver side near the cab.

He said it should have a about a finger gap between bed wall/tail light and canopy, so that the hinged door gets a good seal with tail gate. I took his word for it but it just doesn't look like any other I've seen pictured. Photos below, what do you all think? This is my first tacoma and first canopy.IMG_5361.jpg IMG_5362.jpg IMG_5363.jpg IMG_5360.jpg IMG_5364.jpg 67124009770__9D73E5F4-7903-43C4-BEC1-56A97BBE8AB3.jpg

I’ve never had a Leer or any other truck cap, but I have been extensively researching them and I recently ordered a cap from ARE. My cap hasn’t arrived yet but I can say that in all the research I did, including looking at caps in person, I’ve never seen one with that big a gap when it was installed on the correct truck.

I fully admit I’m not an expert and I could very well be wrong! Just my 2 cents.

Me neither, all the ones I have seen picture or in person are not set this far back, debating if I try to slide it forward myself or take back and ask him to do it.

I have mine slide forward about an inch further than yours but I installed my own, but the ones I have had installed by a dealer (not on a Toyota) did not look like that.

Screw it, I'm going to loosen the clamps tomorrow, slide it forward, line it up best I can myself and tighten it back down. Whats the worst that could happen right? lol

I have a Leer cap... but different model.

Your cap should be moved up a bit and tighten up, so your finger won't fit in. Take it back to dealer and they will adjust it for you.

Or you can do it on your own.. all you do is untight the bolts/clamps then move your cap and see if it looks good to you then tight them up.

lol yeah I mean if it’s just resting on the bed then I don’t see what sliding it an inch or so would mess up, although I don’t even have my cap yet so don’t take my advice haha.

    There you go....

Dealer can do it at no charge though.

How tight do you go with those bolts? I don't want to crack the fiberglass.

Dealer is about 80 miles away (closest one to me "locally") I'll give it a shot myself first, and if it doesn't fit right I'll call him and get it in.

I wonder why they installed it that way…I mean it looks pretty obvious to me that it’s not lined up correctly so I feel like they know something we don’t haha, like there’s a reason it was done that way.

Maybe they were in hurry to finish the job task so they move on next one or closing up depending on the time of the day they were working on. Sometimes they don't check to see how it sits.. They moved on after finished it.

If it was me, I check the cap before leaving the lot. I noticed they didn't add the 2 led strips that I wanted in my cap... I was told they didn't have them in stock... so they wanted me to come back in a few days for led strips.

Incorrectly mounted. Dealer should be ashamed for 1. Not doing it right, and 2. lying about it being correct.

Front of the cap should be flush with the bed front.

I just went out and tried to line it up, if its flush with the bed front I can't get the passenger side latch on the canopy window/door to catch. So I backed it off about 1/4" from flush and it latched, then tightened it down.

I’d be pretty pissed about the paint being damaged. I’d probably get them to fix that since they caused it.

On my Leer 100xq, it was even with the front of the bed and close at the back. Definitely NOT a fingers worth of a gap, I couldn't even get my pinky in the gap. Who ever installed it was WRONG. The latches should be adjustable.

That looks like shit. It can't be right. I have never owned a pick'em up truck in my life without a high quality SnugTop on it until I bought this Taco. I have just a tonneau for now. I'm seriously considering one, again. I've never seen one fit that poorly in person. I'd make the adjustment myself if I were you.

Word of advice. Buy a roll of 3" or 4" wide 3M Scotchgard 8mm clear adhesive protective tape and install it on the corner up under the bed and along the entire length of the tailgate where the rubber sweep rests. After a while, your paint will be rubbed off and you'll be down to bare shiny metal. The tape will protect that from happening but you'll need to replace it every couple years or so. That's the only location on numerous trucks I have had, all SnugTops, have worn.

I'm not understanding what's going through the mind of the designers of these newer tops that have all this side overhang? It looks like shit and doesn't need to be there. So many of these hang so far down the side that the cover the upper section of the TRD decal on the back of the bed. I don't get it? I've seen some nice looking toppers that are sweet until you get to that part. It keeps from buying one.

MUCH better. Did they hook up the center brake light up properly? I'd take the tail lights out and check the connections and seal them properly [I'm betting they didn't] and make sure they put a grommet through the drilled hole so the wires don't rub and short out. Touch the paint up also where they drilled it.

It was originally installed too far to the rear. When reinstalled, it's much better.

I would add more clamps to keep it from sliding. On mine, I added 4 clamps -- 2 in the middle of the sides, and 2 on the front. (For the front clamps, you need to have a front accessory rail. One can be easily retrofitted.)
