Not trying to stir the pot, but if you guys want what’s best for the your new truck do that first oil change early. I seriously suggest first one by 500 - 1000 miles. This guy has a great video on the subject. One of the best things you can do to promote longevity.

UOA posted on the 3rd gen forums. This shows exactly what I have been preaching since my purchase. Congrats on your new truck as well.

this is 100% true. There is no way i made it to 181k miles without doing an oil change every 50 miles.

Amsoil makes an oil specifically for the break in period.

hopeful not, I just hope people pay attention to the scientific evidence. This is not opinion, there is hard sciences behind this and why you do this.

So the video is about whether or not an engine is broken in at the factory. His oils samples show that it is not. Nothing surprising there. I have never heard of anyone claiming the factory breaks in engines. In fact the only thing I have ever heard anyone claim was "follow the break in procedures in the manual". Where is the data showing that your engine is going to last longer if you do your first oil change at 500-1000 vs 5k?

I change the oil in my Chevy every 8-10 miles and it still can’t go 150 miles between rebuilds :(

Yeah... new engines obviously have higher levels of metals/particulates in the factory oil fill.

Does the presence of these cause significantly increased engine wear between 1k and 5k miles vs an oil change at 1k?

Used oil analysis can be good for spotting trends that could indicate an impending catastrophic failure. Useful for expensive machines that would cause a large disruption if they fail while in service. Virtually useless for consumer vehicles outside of maybe seeing how many miles you can push out of a single oil change.

When a UOA shows a trend of increasing levels of metals indicative of bearing wear, the solution is not to increase oil change intervals to keep the metal levels down.

On some of the other car and truck forums I used to visit I would like to keep track of the people who change their oil every 500 miles because they want to keep it for 1,000,000 miles and 10,000 years to see if they trade their truck in after two years for the next shiny thing.

I have a neighbor with a brand new Corvette that I swear he’s changing the fucking oil every weekend, that car can’t have more than 2000 miles on it.
