I am looking to get into a decent camera that I will be taking with me for traveling that I have coming up. That being said I have been out of the game for a while and my last camera was a Canon XSi. I was looking for a new point and shoot, but its looking like those are mostly extinct now, so what would the recommendation be for a good all around camera that can also do video and can have a decent amount of zoom or can even do a couple lens to get what I am looking for. I am open to pretty much any kind of camera. Thanks for the help!

Probably trying to keep it under $1500, but that isn't a hard wall, if for a bit more the quality will increase a bunch i'm open to it.

It has excellent auto focus, it’s full frame, the megapixel size isn’t so big that you are filling up all your cards, has a decent burst rate.

The auto focus is the main reason I prefer Sony over Canon these days.

Also, that’s a very small lens so this is a very travel friendly camera, but you can put the big Chungus Sony/Zeiss lenses on it.

Fujifilm X-M5 @ $899 with kit lens (no EVF)

Sony a6100 @ $748 with kit lens (has EVF) all of the upgraded from here don’t upgrade the sensor, you may as well save your money and get the 6100 and upgrade bodies later in life as you acquire great glass and learn more.

Fujifilm X-T50 @ $1,399 with kit lens (has EVF)

Ricoh GR III @ $1,066 is the only truly pocketable APS-C sensor but only comes with a 28mm wider lens (or 40mm standard lens in the IIIx version).

Fujifilm X100V (used/refurbished), great camera. 35mm fixed prime, have taken these all over the world with no issues.

Fujifilm X-T3 (used/refurbished), great camera. Great lenses.

Don’t get caught up in megapixels and gimmicks. Pretty much anything from the Sony A7SIII and Fuji X-T3 onward is great.

I’d save money and get something used.

Sony has the best Auto Focus in the consumer market right now. I’d look at the a6100 first for most people.

I’m all for buying a new camera, technology has changed substantially. Xsi was my first slr. I’m still shooting 2 Canon 6d’s from 2013, so il be watching this thread.

But….. since you said point and shoot, don’t forget that modern cell phones take fantastic photos. Both the videos and exposure blending for photos are outstanding right out of the camera / phone. It’s HDR Magic without the need to do any processing. Photos are sharp.

The three lenses on my wife’s new iphone 17 covers a wide and usable range. It’s impressive.

Not trying to talk you out of new camera, just reminding people to always snap a few photos and videos with the cell phone, every time you are on composition with your “real” camera.

Of course, they won’t have the usable focal range of a superzoom point and shoot, but photos and videos taken with the cell phone are often some of the favorites from every trip. And in a format ready to share.

    Thanks for sharing.
    That modern stuff looks good.
7 stops of in-camera image stabilization must be nice, and the 14.7 stops of dynamic range helps, too.
Compared to the old stuff, the size and weight of this package is a game changer.

Mirrorless in body image stabilization is excellent.

I shoot RF because I have a huge library of EF lenses, but I’ve been thinking about buying this camera to take on vacation because it’s so small.

Looking through this list and kinda leaning to going with a Sony, its looking like the A6100 is discontinued, would that still be the one that you would recommend or a comparable one that is still in production of the same line like the A6400? Is there any downsides to going with the discontinued camera?

Whatever a6xxx you can find for cheapest is just fine. My sister-in-law just got one for her bakery business. Great camera.

Discontinued doesn’t affect much other than is it for sale at retailers or not. Every last year old model camera that’s still killing it today is technically discontinued. I have an X-T3 from I believe 2018 or so that I use way more than my fancy new X-H2S because I like the ergos and photos better.

Whatever Sony a6xxx is available and costs the least is what I would recommend. It’s a great line of cameras and all of the upsell features really aren’t needed, I promise.

An A6400 and a Tamron 18-300 is a pretty good do everything combo at $1500.

    Don't overlook good used gear.

Not mirrorless but the Nikon D7200 / D7500 are great cameras and the good-used-lenses are of decent price as well.

I was shooting the D3500 for a while and rented the D7200 and Sigma 100-400 just to check it out. Liked the combo so much
I bought it outright from lensrentals.com .... great outfit they are. I got my combo of very lightly used gear for less than $1500.

I wound up picking up the A6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens for now and will be looking to add additional lenses in the future. I should be breaking it in this week and will take it to the Bahrain GP next weekend and see how it performs.

Thank you all for the help!

Excellent that's a good camera. I'm pretty impressed with the Sony products be sure to post up some images.

Eventually you'll want to shoot RAW Images for editing. It's simply the 'RAW-DATA' you are messing with like turning a bunch
of dials controlling the 1's and 0's before 'converting' it to a JPG image. Sure you can edit the JPG as well but editing the RAW
data and THEN converting to JPG gives you a good bit more control.

I have already set the camera to shoot raw and JPEG at least for now and might drop the JPEG later when I get more accustom to post processing. Once I get some pictures I will be sure to post them up.
