    Hello everyone.

I replaced my rotors and pads today. Took me longer than I thought as this is the 1st time doing on a Toyota and those rotors were a.bitch to get off.

So I went to test drive and didn't even get down the block as there was a lot grinding. I've never heard this after placing brakes and I've done many, but not toyos . Just turned around and came home. Pads are installed correct. They are Toyota factory pads. Rotors are Powerstop JBR1121XPR which I've verified they are correct per multiple sites.

Attached a pic of what they already did to the rotors. Btw, it's like this on both sides.

Is this normal before break in? Resolution was the backing plate was rubbing. Once that was taken care, all was quiet.

Did you go through the bedding process? Check for any paperwork in the box the pads came in. That rust resistant coating on the rotors is going to wear off the contact surface and they should smooth out.
You really should bed them though. If you can't find the instructions in the pad box, do a little Google search.

I bet you simply put the new pads in and did not take out the pins the calipers slide on, clean them up and regrease them with silicon grease.
Even though those pins have a rubber boot, they still take on moisture and develop rust. When you put in the new pads, the brake calipers are pushed open to a new spot and often no longer move the way they are supposed to on the pins due to the rust and junk that is on the pins. That causes the new brakes to hold their position when applied instead of relaxing like they should and thus the wear on the rotors.
I also bet you smelled burning brake pads also.
Get back in there and take those pins out and service them and all will be good again.

You're thinking of 5 lug calipers.

The 6 lug cals are fixed w/pistons on both sides of the rotor. The pad retaining pins need to be clean but they dont need grease

Was there a coating in the rotors? Any coated rotor will have a rough feel for the first couple miles until that stuff gets scraped off, keep following the break in procedure and see if it smooths out

Sound didn't change when applying brakes

Sound didn't change when pressing brakes. Sounded like metal on metal. I'm going to pop off a wheel this morning and look closer to see if I can find the source

Sounded like metal on metal and didn't change when pressing brakes. Freaked the shot out of me so turned around.

Didja tweak the dust shield into contacting the rotor? It's not hard to do, and the symptoms fit the bill.

On the rear of Subarus, they spot weld a thinner dust shield to the thicker parking brake backing plate, in what looks like a pinch weld. In rusty areas, that joint likes to "bloom" with rust, and a lot of aftermarket rotors don't have enough chamfer inside the drum-in-hub inside lip to clear... it's rather harmless, but you should hear the racket it makes.

    Nope

I just finished removing wheel and nothing but pad is touching. Never knew toyo pads were so noisy prior to break in. Gonna go give her hell in a few and see if it irons out.

Gave it my best shot from my own past (and a bit lazy) experience. Glad to hear you got it taken care of though. I will remember that fix.

I kinda figured, once you said it didn't change when you apply the brakes... even putting the pads in backwards (you laugh, and you should, but it has been done!) would sound different when you hit the brakes. Sound doesn't change = something outside of the normal pad/rotor contact points.

My sentiments as well. I was really concerned the rotors rubbing on the calipers, but just didn't make sense.
