I can't find anything about what 8 speed transmission is going in the new Tacoma. Anyone find anything yet?

Here's hoping that it's the ZF 8 trans.

this is a pure guess, but i wouldnt be surprised if its the same as the one in the tundra. it might have different ratios but still be the "same" transmission. the 2 trucks do share the same platform now.

    edit
for some reason thought the 3rd gen tundra was an 8 spd. its a 10. however, the LX570, and land cruiser with the 5.7 do have an 8 spd transmission so maybe that one?

Pretty sure they've had an 8 speed variant in the Highlander and other models for a while. Now, obviously this has been put in a RWD case. Betting they're a good unit. However, I do remember someone with a Highlander with the 8 speed and they hated it. Same characteristics of the 6 speed auto in the 3rd gens...

I think you are right based on what he says at 14:45 here:

This is a bit of a concern for me but have to take into account the electric motor too. The proof will be in the pudding.

That would make sense. Hopefully this trans is tuned a bit better and the gear ratios match the power.

You mean like the 8-speed in the Supra?

Correct. It's in quite a few high HP cars and trucks and performs pretty well from what I have read.

The supra is a BMW. Nothing on that car will be on a Tacoma.

Just as long as GM didn't get close to anyone making the decision on the tans used, it should be fine. Better gear spread may make it so you don't have to regear until much larger tires are installed.

The new 8 speed auto has to perform better than the current 6 speed IMO.

8 speed auto on my wife’s 2017 Highlander is great. Don’t know how it compares to the newer ones.

I was wondering about this 8 speed. Where did it come from? Why 8spd instead of 10?

    So are hybrids. :D

Is this the Tundra 10spd with tow gears locked out? Ford uses a 10spd with their t4 Ranger, and GM uses a 8spd with their t4 twins. Both trucks are similar spec to t4 Tacoma.

I have suspicions is same 2.4L/8 auto combination as in Highlander

Toyota has a large stake in Japanese transmission builder Aisin, and have used them in many vehicles, so I would imagine it will be one of their transmissions.

I bet the 8-speed is built by Aisin...they do build a damn good transmission.

Just look at all the Tacomas and Tundras over the years with 200k+ miles on the original Aisin transmissions, with the original fluid...amazing!

It is not the Tundra 10AT with gears locked out: according to the 4G chief engineer (13:57):

    https://youtu.be/Fh-s9O3EgRs

Edit: LMAO, notice how he makes a point of saying the driveablity has been dramatically improved. I swear he was about to say "compared to...", but his brain caught up with his mouth just in time!!!

You can be pretty sure the Tacoma's transmission is not related to the Highlander at all. Case or internals. You can't just take a transverse gearset and pop it into a concentric application.

Toyota doesn't have a lot of 8-speed longitudinal transmissions, so if it is the same architecture as another transmission, I would look at the AA80E/AA80F (Aisin TL-80SN) or AE80E/AE80F (Aisin TL-80NF), the AE80(E/F) would seem more likely.

Old thread, but the new transmissions are:

    AL80E: 2WD 8AT
    AL80F: 4WD Non-Hybrid 8AT
    L580F: 4WD Hybrid 8AT
    RC60F: 4WD 6MT
