    The topic has been debated ad nauseam here for five years.

    Thank you so much for your very RELEVANT and USEFUL reply ha. I was expecting a difference between my little NA 4cyl car and this v6 that sported the "Toyota Racing Development" badge so I hope you see where I'm coming from. Mainly created this thread to find out from 6 speed owners if the lag was more so the engine rather than tranny. And also to see if auto owners generally got used to it or liked it. Thank you again for not spewing useless and irrelevant and opinionated generalities lol

    MT = 4.30

    AT = 3.91

    Stock gearing alone is why I’d stick with MT. Could run 33s with very little loss of power. AT Will be a c*nt on the freeway with oversized tires and stock gearing - expect it to hunt.

    This is coming from a 2.7 MT guy with stock 3.91 gearing. Trust me, take advantage of 4.30 + V6 power. One less thing you’ll have to modify jumping tire size (unless you go 315s/35’s).

    OP you might want to do a search here for terms like - DFCO , rev hang , accumulator delete , clutch problems , among others having to do with manual transmission . Although there is a cult like following of the manual here , it is not a perfect set up. I my self bought the AT and after a couple of TSB flashes , it shifts just as I would expect it to .
    Edit -
    and 1 other big one is the reverse gear ratio and stalling while backing up a trailer

    An AT Taco is like a woman. Take the time to get to know her and she'll ride like a dream.

    I’ll give you the towing - I’m an MT guy and why anyone would buy one when they know they’ll be towing a shit ton is beyond me. But to each their own lol.

    A set of 4 cylinder vehicles that weigh less than half a Tacoma. It isnt equivalent. Being able to accelerate very quickly as a means of safety is extremely rare. Choosing acceleration as a safety features seems really foolish.

    did you also picture a dumbass merging onto the freeway going 40 before a big rig scares the hell of them? Aha.

    (Totally in agreement with you).

    Nope, it isn’t. Tooling around town, doing a U turn, etc. it makes a difference.

    ECT PWR does not affect anything at wide open throttle, drag racing will not tell you anything about the ECT button. The SHIFT POINTS at partial throttle are affected and i believe the throttle curve is as well.

    To the OP: If you want to do anything other that put around you need to have the ECT button on. I cannot drive this truck without it on most of the time. I want it rev out and have good throttle response, and it wont do that in normal mode. I dont really understand why the engineers built it like they did and as soon as I can afford it im going OVtune. It is a flaw in my opinion but not a deal breaker for me.

    On my truck the automatic tranny tries to keep the engine humming around 1800 RPM’s to help maximize fuel mileage.

    I have a completely stock 2020 MT and I have no issues. It is a truck but I have enough "pep" to merge on to the freeway or pass a vehicle if need be. I can get to 75mph easily and still have more if I need it. I am not an aggressive driver so I tend to take it easy most of the time. I have not driven a 3rd gen AT so I have no comparison between the 2.

    I'm almost reluctant to get involved in this thread but here goes.

    In my 2020 with MT I notice that at around 3000 rpms and up is where ALL the fireworks are at.

    If the AT never lets the rpms go that high, I can see why it might feel sluggish.

    (.02 cents)

    A few.
    No placebo. Doesn't make a difference when at full throttle. Only during normal driving.

    IF someone claims that as truth, they need driving lessons.

    Same folks will never know what a rev limiter feels like. Or that they have one.

    Go on. Find it. :thumbsup:

    Auto for me. Thought about the manual but you loose out on some of the fancy 4wd stuff. I use my TRD OR on rough roads. 4LO is used often. I’m a big fan of crawl control. Portions of the trail that used to cause some stress can now be done with a little less stress. It’s not a fail safe button as some people believe it to be. My friend has an 18 TRD OR manual. He struggles a lot more then I do on the trails. Even though he has better gearing. I can get over stuff a lot easier and in more control. I drove his truck. The manual transmission felt unpredictable. I guess there are mods to help this. I’m not new to manuals and have owned jeeps and small sporty cars with them. Wasn’t impressed with the Tacoma’s manual.

    I think it's exaggerated online. I have about 1500 miles and yeah its still fresh, but no complaints. Did highway and city so far, no complaints in the city, no complaints on the highway. Leave it in drive no ect, use cruise all the time. I'm happy with it, and like that it's a simple transmission with only 6 speeds. 6 is enough, no need for 10.
