How many miles are on the odometer and what is the condition of the truck otherwise?

1st owner, 10th owner... has it always lived in SoCal?

    Is the frame rusty?

Is it stock or 6" drop bracket lift?

Just replaced my 2005 tacoma motor with 208K on it. Cost about 7.5k out the door. 3 year warranty through Jaspers. They revise the motor so it doesnt fail again due to the head gasket as well as add some forged parts to it.

If you can help it, i'd try and salvage the truck. Blown motor truck aint worth much...

GL on the journey either way.

    Welcome aboard!
I'd fix it. Drop a new motor in then keep or sell. LS swap it and really enjoy it

    Thank you Cam
The most inexpensive Engine we can find right now is about $7k. Then out the door is around $11-12k.

Jeez. I’m not trying to be rude but all you guys are getting crazy ripped off.
I blew an engine in my 2006 4runner. 4.0. Same engine…..looked around for about a week and found a fj engine for $1000 with 146k miles on it. Bought it. Had a mechanic swap in the engine for $500…plus I had to buy oil and coolant so that’s another $100-$200…..

I would say swap the engine and then sell it. Or sell it to me with the blown engine for cheap. Lol

LS swap is shoving a ls V8 in there. You won't want to sell it after but cost a bit more coin.
Definitely got to be other motors cheaper than 7k. Keep looking. Google is your friend

I really appreciate your reply Paul. Just not sure I have the time or a mechanic around here that would go the extra mile there. That also seems unusable cheap for labor.

I 2nd a used lower mileage motor. Seen many rebuilt motors break down 1-2 years after install. No one builds them better than the factory.

Didn't know who Jasper was, so I looked it up. Thanks for the solid option. Running with that.

I'd really enjoy a new truck, though real difficult to give up a Tacoma!

I would go with a used toyota motor over a Jasper or reman any day of the week. Like @Superdave1.0 said, no one builds them better than the factory. Trust me, you only want to swap your motor out once, it is a huge amount of work.

My close buddy just got screwed on his FJ80. Rebuilt motor, he paid $4500. 1.5 years later it overheats, now mixing oil and coolant. Most rebuilders use cheap Chinese parts for the rebuild, including a cheap headgasket, piston rings, etc.

im laughing at the fact that you'd rather go with a "used toyota" junkyard motor with which you have no clue of the maint. history or how trashed it was taken care of over a Jasper motor.. You go on to describe your "nightmare motor" that you pushed him towards. Trust me. Ive owned my tacoma for over 10 years and it wasnt easy forking over that sorta cash to keep it going but i did. My local shop has my back too.

Mine comes with a 100k / 3 year warranty. If anything happens they fix it no questions asked.

If it survives 100k miles and blows up the next day thats fine. 3 years is plenty enough time to put it through it's paces and see.

Also, the average owner probs doesnt know how to pull a motor out, nor have the space, time, or the tools to do so.

Thats like 2K+ in labor alone in most shops. You not having to eat that twice is good for you. You're the exception not the norm.

    Who are these "rebuilders"?

I wouldn't buy a motor for my truck without some sorta warranty. Either that or go straight to Toyota and get bent over price wise.

Thank you for the info. Kind of what I was thinking. Glad someone considers, not everyone is a toolhead. Wish I had the space, time, and tools to take care of it. Unfortunately, it is also my commuter vehicle. Leaning towards a Jasper at the moment.
