i ordered some new wheels and they are coming with new TPMS.
If I purchase another set of tires and mount them on my Alloys, will they need to be programmed each time I change my wheels?
I want to keep the original tires on these steel wheels and will run my Alloy wheels in the summer. I have a friend who sells tires but he is closed already and wanted to run this by Toyota owners. I read some where that the sensors will reset themselves. If that is the case I will be good to go.

Pretty sure you would need to reset each time they are swapped.......seems like 4 is the magic number for the computer to remember as guys have tried to do 4 + a spare and I don't recall anyone having any luck. But, if you are only doing it twice a year shouldn't be any problem.

Our trucks can only store 4 TPMS codes. You will have to have the truck programmed to recognize whichever set is on it, every time you switch wheels. I have the same set up, for now I have the dealer do it but eventually I'll get Carista or Techstream so I can do it myself.

I guess it could get expensive then?

guess that depends on what the dealer (or whomever would reprogram) charges and what you might consider expensive.

no idea what carista or techstream cost.

Ok thanks for the info, I am sure my guy will do this for me, I have been going to him for 30 years, so hope he can do it, he has a tire shop attached to his garage. I will call him Monday and report back, I am hoping buy the tires from him he will then do what ever programming is needed

Carista will show you the currently programmed TPMS sensors (write them down!) and will also allow you to change them if you have the four new sensor ID numbers.

HOWEVER - 2018 and up use 7 digit sensor IDs compared to previous years using 6 digit. No idea if you can enter a 6 digit number and have it accepted.

I have the Ateq Quickest TPMS tool and it works great for what you are looking for. It can store two sets of sensors. To switch codes in the truck you plug in the tool and select which set you want to upload.

Cool, thanks for this...... Seems pretty simple so why do these places who sell tires etc. charge so much?.
Before I purchase that I will ask my guy about this. If I purchase the second set of tires from him he will do this for me I am sure, thanks again guys for this info
I will know the numbers on the set coming but how do you get your numbers from the set on the truck now, or don,t you need that info?
Maybe the meter will just flip them for you....

The Quickset tool will download the sensor codes currently stored in the truck. Then you would enter the new codes. I figure this tool has already paid for itself for me.

I am thinking of buying 4 snow tires, get them mounted on the steel rims and the tires on the truck now get them mounted on the new wheels. Is there a certain snow tire that works with the Tacomas? I have 16/7 new wheels on the way
Can you void any warranty by placing tires of your choosing?

You can not void your warranty by replacing your tires. I have been running General Grabber Arctic XL tires for two winters now (stock size 265/70 R16). They are pretty cheap and I find them to be great tires, quiet, smooth, great on snow and ice. There are certainly more expensive winter tires out there and they may be better but I have found that even the less expensive winter tires are better than the best all season tires in snow and ice.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I am not sure what tires my guy sells, so I will ask about those tires by General. I will not have my wheels until, the 22nd and most rebates are over by this date.
Once I get the wheels I will get back to this post

Update, going with Goodyear tires as there is a rebate on them.
Also my mechanic told me before hand he may not be able to program the new TPMS. He mention on some Toyota's and even Suburas they have issues programming. I will pass this hurdle once my wheels come tomorrow. So looking at Goodyear ultra grip ice. I will come back once things progress

Wheels did not arrve yet, no tpms with them, so I asked my guy how much does he charge for them. He then asked for my vin number. I did not know you need a vin number when purchasing them. I see them on eBay and Amazon for 150 bucks for 4 of them.
I was going to buy 4 but if they go by vin number I need to be careful
Also when switching tires wil the spare tire interfere with the programs
    Switching from summer to winter.
I am reading the newer Tacoma's do not have tpms valve. If this is true I should be ok flipping

There is no TPMS in your spare tire, it affects nothing. The VIN# is just used to make sure you get compatible sensors (not specific to your particular VIN just a way to identify your exact model/year). You can get compatible sensors almost anywhere, but YOUR TRUCK (not the sensors) needs to be programmed to recognize the new sensors. Once the new sensor IDs are programmed into your trucks computer your truck will no longer recognize the original 4 sensors and will therefore need to be reprogrammed each time you switch wheels. As far as newer Tacomas not having TPMS valves, I have no idea what that means. They most certainly TPMS sensors which are part of the valve stem.

You seem responsible enough to manually check air pressure maybe just put one set in a pressurized tube and keep in cab, leave both sets of wheels with regular stems.

I am sorry for the confusion, Mentioned new Tacoma owners spare do not have TPMS and you said that, so I should be good to go. Once I get the price from the tire guy. I am pretty sure I will be buying them from him because he will buy TPMS that will work for his meter. He mentioned to me that they have problems programming Tacomas. Thanks for the info.

I heard about this but do not understand how this will work, I am all for this idea, then I can keep the ones on the truck now and when they change tires just remove them??
