My truck isn't quite a tacoma but it's a 94 pickup and has the 22re and I'm having an issue with it at idle. When sitting still it will idle up and down. It does not shut off and accelerates just fine. Runs good other than the up and down idle. I would think it has to do with vacuum but any help figuring out the issue would help. Thanks

Maybe check throttle position sensor? Haynes or Chilton manual outlines testing, though you need a multi meter.

Could be vacuum. While the motor is running try giving a quick spray of starting fluid at any suspect vacuum joints or hoses. If there's a leak the starting fluid with be sucked in causing the engine speed to change. You'd think it would make the engine rev up but everytime I tried this it made the engine stumble.

Oh also you should test the air flow meter, the silver box on the air filter housing. Testing is done with a multi meter and is described in haynes or chilton manuals.

Another tip to detect vacuum leaks is to take a piece of rubber hose, like 3/8" fuel line or similar and hold one end close to your ear. Then probe the other end around any suspect connection or area. You'll hear a loud rushing sound if there's a leak nearby where you hold the hose. Works like a stethoscope.

I had a 22re that idled rough. i'd continually adjust the idle screw and it would be better then get so bad I had to have my foot on the accelerator at stop lights. Finally figured it out! The O ring on the idle screw had deteriorated so it couldn't hold an adjustment. Fixed it for less than $1! Maybe that's the issue with your 22RE?

Had the same issue with my old truck and i replaced the TPS, throttle body and thermostat before i had a compression test done and it was a slight head gasket leak.

    I would get it tested

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I replaced a vacuum line and the o ring on the idle screw and it's running like a champ!
