    hello,

i am in the process of changing timing belt and i am at the point of changing out the water pump. anyway i purchased a brand new OEM toyota water pump (part number 16100-69398-83), but when i took out the original water pump i noticed that it is different that what i purchased.

basically everything is exactly the same but the new water pump does not have the groove on the mating surface that the original that came off the truck does.

i checked for the original part number and it is 16100-69395!

it does also say that the part 16100-69395 was replaced by part number 16100-69398-83.

    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem...0=VZN170L-CRPDKAB)&Location=water-pump,,16100

does that mean if i order part number 16100-69395 i will get the new 16100-69398-83 part instead?

    was the original 16100-69395 discontinued?

should i install the new water pump that doesnt have the groove? reason for making sure is when i read the FSM it says to put the FIPG inside the groove of the water pump. since the new pump has no groove do i still put in the FIPG?

the hew water pump did come with a metal/rubber gasket. do i put FIPG on both sides of the gasket and install?

or no FIPG with this new water pump setup?

the new gasket that came with the new water pump that doesn't have the groove in it

    IMG_0191_zps3u1lclkd_b09e4e7b5c756f06e00dfa599bb0ffa91de85da8.jpg

gasket made of some kind of metal with rubber and gasket like material on the surface.

not sure how to apply the FIPG to this.

the procedure in the 2000 4x4 TRD ex cab FSM definitely specifies putting FIPG in the groove and installing within 5-7 mins.

was this a defective part that was updated to this new metal gasket method? because the original had a lot of fluid leaking out from everywhere.

    how should i proceed?

try to order part number 16100-69395 and hope it comes with a groove so i can install as the FSM recommends

    or
install the new 16100-69398-83. not sure if i should use any FIPG with this route. and if so how much and where?

    any help is greatly appreciated.

Clean off block surface of old FIPG and install new pump with the new metal style gasket. This is how they are. You don't need to use and fipg on the new gasket.

I did mine recently and the new water pump was like what you have pictured. I just followed the same torque specs. I didn't add FPIG. So far so good...

No groove, no fipg! Use the gasket that came with new waterpump. Doubling up on any gaskets never works, period!

I would assume the redesign was do to labor. The cost of having a dealer install the water pump is the same but they save 30min having the tech scrape old fipg off. So I turn they are making more per hr.

I believe the part number suffix -83 indicates it's a rebuilt part. If that sites says the original part has been replaced by this, then this is all that you can get from Toyota. It should be as high a quality rebuild as any. Sometimes you see these rebuilt parts with -83 for alternators, half shafts, etc.

    thanks everyone for the input.

    1 more question.

when installing the thermostat the FSM says to install the "jiggle valve" DOWNWARD. I'm assuming thats the little piece that can jiggle around that is hanging there on the thermostat.

anyway the videos that i watched says to install the thermostat with the little jiggly thing pointing upwards?

does the little giggle piece need to point up or downward like the FSM states?

    this little piece

Install it with the "jiggle valve" at 12 o'clock. This helps bleed off air. if installed at the bottom it may cause an overheat condition.

I have a V6 and when I asked myself that question I took a look at the manual. It said to install the thermostat with the jiggle valve at 12 o-clock.

    So I did.

When I then drove the truck I noticed that the water temperature gauge needle was exactly centered (pointed at 9 o-clock), so I read the manual again. This time it said to install the thermostat with the jiggle valve down. It was then that I noticed I was reading from 2 different manuals. I can't recall which ones though. Anyways I reinstalled the thermostat with the jiggle valve down. When I drove the truck the temperature gauge needle now pointed below the 9 o-clock position, just like it has since I bought the truck new.

There must be a hundred threads on this. You can install it however you want, but I installed mine with the valve at 6 o-clock. I have been happy with it ever since. (I bought the truck brand new in 1998, and replaced the thermostat about 2 years ago, FWIW.)

thanks again everyone for the input. I will follow the 2000-FSM and install the jiggle valve downwards.

sucks that the videos online showing the procedure all say to install the valve at the 12 o-clock position.

seems the consensus is downward at the 6 o-clock position

    Correct. V6 = jiggle valve at 6 o'clock. I4 = jiggle valve at 12 o'clock.
Edit - this info is applicable to the Toyota 5VZ 3.4 and the Toyota 3RZ 2.7, just felt need to clarify.

Interesting. My V6 when I replaced waterpump, the original jiggle valve was at 12. I installed it back the same way.
