    Hello everyone,

Just yesterday on a local road my speedometer quit on me, and along with it came the CEL code P0500. After some research, it appears that my speedometer cable has broken. I’ve checked out the gear on the transfer case and it’s in tact, but the speedometer, trip and odometer no longer function.

I took it upon myself to call Toyota and they gave me a part number 83710-35200 but they say there’s not a single one available in the whole country and Toyota discontinued the part. Is there another part number I can use as a substitute, or one that’s close enough to work? If someone even has one maybe we can work something out. Any help would be appreciated, I’ve got 250k on her now I’d hate to let this be the deathly blow!

    Vehicle details
    1997 (mfg 12/1996) Tacoma
    2 door standard cab
    I4 2.7L 4x4 4 speed automatic
    Cable driven speedometer

Im totally with you, but it seems not a single website has this part number, I’m looking for any alternate part numbers I can “massage” to fit. (Extended cab models that are too long, etc etc).

Last resort for me is the scrap yard, these trucks changed so much throughout this year by going electronic I’d like to only rip the dash apart once.

I don't think the Xtracabs have any longer cables. The engine/transmission is the same length, only the rear drive line is different.

They vary by part #. But I'm sure there are alternative ones that are still available that can work. 4runner ones would work too.

You can swap dash to digital and add electric sending unit and wire if you don't find a cable that works.

Wouldn’t this require a new ECU considering the mechanical dash holds the vehicle speed sensor and sends its data from the Speedo cable?

That would be great, do you happen to know what model years and such would be compatible?

Back in the day there were "universal" cables/repair kits. This was the inner cable and some adapters, you would cut to length.
Looks like NAPA still has them. I have no experience with their use on a Taco.

I care less about the speedometer, and more about the odometer for maintenance purposes and the vehicle speed sensor for the transmission. I also don’t like having the CEL on all the time, I won’t know if an actual code comes up

most large cities have "speedometer" shops for speedometer calibration... they should have the capability to manufacture a new cable for you or replace the flex drive portion.

    *RESOLVED*

So come to find out, almost all of the speedometer cables available from that era are about the same length with the same ends on both sides. The only difference I saw, was the placement of the plastic grommets where the cable is secured to various parts of the truck and the heat insulation placement. The cable I have posted below fit my 1997 Tacoma 2.7L standard cab 4x4 Automatic with no modifications aside from a couple zip ties to secure it where the plastic grommets are misplaced. I hope this helps the next guy, because the actual part number for that truck is nearly extinct brand new.
