Not finding much info on this. Just bought a 2019 TRD from a dealer. Navigation is out of date for my area. Do I need to go back to the dealer to get an update? Is it worth it? Mine is pretty bad but not having a cell phone to use I’m stuck with it.

There's a setting option that should be able to check for updates, have you tried that yet?

The dealer will charge you way too much for an "up to date" card. Remove the card from your headunit, check the version number on it, and then head to eBay and/or Amazon. There are reputable sellers offering more recent versions.

Haven’t tried the Setting option yet and did not know it existed. Will give it a go

Thanks for the advice on getting the card from other sellers.

My truck came with one of the premium audio options and has dynamic navigation, which automatically downloads the most recent map data available. The service is free for 3 years, we'll see if it's worth keeping after that. My thinking so far is either I pay for the service or pay to update the maps periodically. It's worked well so far.

This is what I have also. In the head unit settings you can manually check for updates for it, hopefully the OP has this as well and it works for him. Otherwise to the wallet it will be..

In my opinion you will not notice anything when updating from a 2019 map to a 2021 map. If you can update for free then go for it, if you have to pay for the update, skip it.

Wasn’t an option I was offered so I guess it’s to the wallet I go. Found a card online that claims to be a 2021 update. All the highway exit numbers in my state have been changed so hope the card has these.

Let us know if there is an actual update, perhaps highway exit numbers are important enough for an update.

In my town the police station and city hospital, that were built in the 50's & 60's, have been torn down and rebuilt across town almost 20 years now. Guess where many GPS systems want to direct you, yup right to the old locations which are vacant lots now. I've always feared someone would use the emergency feature on their system and be directed to a vacant lot. Hopefully people will use 911 and not the closest hospital feature.

That’s insane! I had been driving a company car for the last 13 years and using a cell phone app for navigation and it stayed up to date on its own. Don’t have either now and am finding the Toyota nav somewhat, I’m being kind, lacking from what I was used to. If I go the purchase route I’ll let you know what I find.

I use a handheld gps unit for cycling and hiking and am able to get free maps for it. Does anyone know if the same download would work with the Toyota nav? Does anyone also know what format the vehicle nav uses for maps?

Your phone based navigation software, like the Toyota dynamic navigation, stays up to date on it's own because it's software is cloud based and not 100% local on your device. Handheld GPS units, just like the Garmin unit that my wife uses, have no cloud software connection and therefore require file downloads in order to stay current. It's like the difference between Microsoft Office a few years ago and now. You used to buy a CD and a license and install it on your computer. Now you get Office 365 which is cloud based, for which you pay an annual subscription, and always get the latest version of the software. It's much easier (and cheaper) to maintain software on one cloud server than to push files to literally millions of individual machines.

I bought a new map sd card for my wife's 2015 4Runner on ebay from NavKings (TOYOTA Navigation Micro SD Card Map Data LATEST UPDATE OEM 86271 0e072). It came in actual Toyota packaging and has worked just fine. Paid $35.99.

I got one off Ebay too, not from NavKings but similar $35. Toyota packaging Oe072 looks like real thing. The map works fine, not fully updated but better than the original 2016. Problem is if I try to use the navigation to direct me to a location, the radio shuts down trying to search for the address. I put the old card back in and the navigation works fine. Must be a pirated card and Entune figures it out at that point...

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
OE nav is marginal at best.

Since I buy used vehicles, I prefer my portable unit or cell phone. Perfect for flying somewhere and using in a rental or travel with a friend with no nav.

We have a RAV Limited. After its first few blunders I've never turned it on again.

    I agree, I think.
    I have a 19 4Runner with an old chip
    Ends in 35012.

    86271-0E073 is the latest.

If I update .... is the interface, that sux, still the same? Is it just the maps that update?

I have a Garmin, used them for many years, and we use paper maps all the time. I am just trying to learn the Toyota nav, and so far only see it as extremely difficult to use.

In Canada, packages that include embedded navigation also include 3 years of map updates, up to 3 updates. I'm sure the US has something similar. The 2019 may still be eligible for a free update at the dealer.

    Thank you.
I called the dealer, parts department, and was told the retail price.

The dynamic nav pkg seems like an $1800 rip off. You can simply use your phone on models without it. Am I missingvsomething?
