True. I never kept any of our 4 Honda Accords past 250k because I fretted over the wear the Frams and dino oil had allowed. :anonymous:

When I moved to Nissan and Mazda I switched to Purolator Pure One.

You should be using a filter designed for your oil use and OCI.

If you change your oil with dino every 3,000 miles you need to be using a different filter than if you use a true PAO synthetic oil changed every 25,000 miles.

There is no one correct answer.

Please explain how a larger filter can increase oil capacity?

Are you saying you can put 6 quarts in a 4.0 (assuming you’re good w the recommended 5.5 quarts)?

This larger filter is going to suspend an additional .5 quarts while it’s running?

    No larger pan?

No concerns of cavitation by the crank which may cause aerated oil to circulate?

    Thanks!

When the truck is running the larger oil filter will be full of oil. If you don't add extra oil to the engine, the engine will operate essentially as if [however much larger the oversize filter is] quarts were missing.

Me personally, I just take a roll of high quality toilet paper (none of that single ply crap), put it into a soup can, and duct tape it onto the engine. It works great and saves a ton of money.

I've used NAPA 1348 for years but then bought a 10 pack of Toyota OEM filters. Honestly I am going to switch back to the NAPA filters when I have used all the OEM filters. They don't seem as well made as the NAPA 1348s.

Until two identical vehicles driven in identical environments by the same person or machine over a 100k mile period of time, the long live oil/filter argument will forever continue.

That is correct. I put 6 qts oil in my crankcase. When engine is turned off, the anti-drain back valve holds the oil in the oil filter, at which point you can accurately top off. My bro has a remote filter in his Tundra and adds an extra quart with the oil in the lines and same size filter I use. I admit the capacity is closer to .4 qts but half a quart is easier to add and the engine will have no problem handling an extra .1 qt. Oil level on my dipstick is currently showing about an 1/8th inch past the full mark. When I started using this size filter, the left over oil filters are now being installed in my daughters' I4 Camry and Corolla, so I bumped oil capacity by .2 qts in their cars.

I started using this larger filter about 30K ago. From 60K to 130K, I used the 'intermediate' size - Purolator PL 20195; Mobil1 M1-209; Wix/Napa 51516; Baldwin B243 - these are some of the filters I used, and increased oil capacity by .2 qts. It was an oil filter thread here on TW where I first saw the larger filters being used.

Jesus, is there anything that China wont counterfeit?
Unbelievable. Is there any way at all to tell the difference by looking at them?
I typically buy OEM filters by the case via Amazon. Hope I haven't been getting a bunch of fakes.

For a product that is labeled OEM there is NO requirement that they must actually be manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer. None.

OEM, after the end of the model year, simply means that the product is OEM in design.

Many original equipment manufacturers cease making parts over time.

To not be the original equipment manufacturer is not “making knock offs”.

If you look up OEM headlights, you’ll find roughly a dozen manufacturers of an OEM light within 2 minutes. A dozen companies never made the original headlight in the truck. It’s just OEM in design.

So people are making assumptions about what OEM means, although the term is highly misleading.

An OEM design product could be better than the original part. Not sure why everyone is making the immediate assumption if its not the true equipment manufacturer, then its a sub-par product.
Toyota originally sourced headlights that cracked and failed. Might be nice to buy an OEM designed headlight that doesn’t crack.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.

I think you mean OEM *spec?

I just bought two headlights from Toyota. Boxes are marked "Genuine Toyota" and "Made in USA". There were no other oem choices to buy from. To gain the title of Genuine Toyota, the parts must meet or exceed Toyota's specifications for materials and design. There are many types of plastics...Toyota specifies a particular recipe for their headlights. Can a headlight be made of another, cheaper type of plastic? Sure it can. But it will likely not perform/last as well or long as a Genuine part will. Can I tell, by looking at or touching the light, which type of plastic it is? Nope. Of course there will be exceptions, but they will usually cost as much or more than oem due to costlier materials and or intensive manufacturing processes needed to surpass oem overall quality.

Why should I use genuine Toyota-manufactured parts?
Knowing where to get the parts your Toyota needs is one thing, but you might be wondering why you should even bother with genuine parts when you can buy after-market, generic parts at any auto parts shop. Here are our top reasons why we believe using only authentic parts is the best choice for you and your car:

    • After-market parts from other stores may cost less upfront, but will cost more money later if they don't play well with the other key parts of your car and need to be repaired often
    • Toyota-made parts are crafted and designed specifically for your Toyota model
    • Toyota parts are constructed with the same attention to detail and quality as the rest of your car, so you know they're reliable
    • Our replacement parts from Toyota are built using the same specs as the original parts of your engine and other important pieces of your car, so you know they all work well together by design
