With the Tundra hybrid getting that kind of mpg, it would seem the coming Tacoma hybrids can improve on that some.

So the hybrid Tacoma will average 20 mpg vs the Tundras 18, and looses 500 lbs towing capacity, for $60K+ seems totally worth it…

I don’t consider 18 mpg good. It’s pretty terrible actually since V8 trucks (non Tundra) can easily do that or better.

Some people will never buy a Tundra.

Get a diesel or a R1T if you want torque or better fuel economy. iForcemax is for creating more torque when towing, and eliminate throttle lag.

Believe you missed the point on that one.

The Tacoma is not getting much gains in the miles per gallon department for an awful lot of coin.

Towing capacity goes down 500 lbs, so don’t really see the point of it other than the temporary thrill of racing stop light to stop light.

I think you guys are digging into the fuel mileage a little too much on this. Toyota knew that moving to a smaller displacement engine would affect low rpm torque, so they added a small electric motor to help out when the turbo can't..

They were never trying to make the truck mimic a Prius or EV

What is the weight difference between the Hybrid Taco and Hybrid Tundra? Hybrid Tundra is base 6000-6100 lbs. Best I can find is that the Tacoma may be 4900-5000? Quite a difference - imagine the battery will be able to go a bit longer than the Tundra. 4 cyl vs 6 cyl will also make a difference. I don't expect miracles, but it isn't a direct comparison to the Tundra by any means.

    All of it
Catching up on this whole thread.

1.)Based of the previously listed spec on the Toyota website for the Land Cruiser of 27mpg, it will be interesting to see what the hybrids actually get. It will be better than 20mpg, for sure. In recent testing, TFL was finding that their test Tacoma was getting fuel economy than advertised. I think it was around 23-24mpg (non hybrid). I'd be curious if a bed cover adds any noticeable difference as well.

2.)On the solid state battery thing, small batteries have been produced finally. That's what's in the new JBL speaker and Toyota is quite proud of it. They had to use solid state, otherwise the heat from the sun blasting on it would cause issues apparently.

3.)Who knows what direction their hybrid tech will go in the future, perhaps solid state is the long term goal. I imagine by 5th gen Toyota, Honda and INEOS will be rolling out the hydrogen systems, but I can't see them giving up the hybrid stuff at that point. People will be used to having all of the extra power. They have to offer high torque numbers to not look silly next to full electric trucks.

4.)And in regards to the 60k Tacoma. Back in February I did a video on the inside info I got on the 4th gen, and people were calling it the "baby Tundra". I argued the Tundra was a monster Tacoma. Looks aside though, I think something important to note with this new truck, at least on paper, it is it actually a baby Tundra.

This truck is the first time in a long time, that we have a fully boxed frame that is very similar to what the Tundra offers. With the hybrid models said to be offering a 1700lb payload. They will have MASSIVE brakes on the upper trims, big payload numbers, and full size truck engine output. I know not everyone is excited about the 4banger, let alone a 4banger hybrid, but again on paper this truck is a "mid sized" (1997 full size) is built like a full size. I do wish the trucks could be less expensive of course, but what these trucks offer looks to be quite promising.

The old Toyota pickups were once a Hilux. We appear to be getting that now. Basically a Land Cruiser 250 truck. I am pretty stoked about it. I was about to jump off my Toyota fan boiihood until Toyota announced the 4th gen. They werent doing anything cool for a looong time. They really put a lot of effort into making these trucks better than the 2nd and 3rd gen. Time will tell how the powertrain holds up though.

The Hybrid Tacoma has a 500 pound less towing capacity, so guessing it probably weighs 500 pounds more than the Non-Hybrid.

Both of my Ram trucks were trouble free as well as the other 2 my father owned (OK they were dodge then). Resale value was less than stellar but I could not complain about the performance. (one was a 1500 with the 6 cyl pentastar one was a 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi)

They don’t need the extra power or torque of the 2.4t because they drive like there’s an egg under the pedal but it’s ridiculous that the SR has less torque than the v-6 they current have and don’t use all of.

or something, idk. It’s all way over my head.

It's not as easy as just putting in a larger battery. There's more to a PHEV than that. Would be nice though.

Too slow. Has bad timing chain guides and rear main seal. Engine has to come out for both anyway. But had to fix a lot of stuff in the house first. Bathroom remodel...$$$$$. But the LC is hibernating and will be resurrected.

Sorry to hear. Yeah always something. The old first gen needs a new driveshaft, and possibly a rear wheel bearing. We did an art studio for my wife, that was first priority. She is very pleased. As they say happy wife, happy life. Lol! I probably talk so much on here, because she won’t let me get in a word edgewise. Lol!

I feel like they could have put a bigger engine and more powerful turbo set up in it but instead, they were like we need to have a really heavy hybrid to make some of this horsepower, because… Reasons.

Probably best and do everyone a favor and nuke the whole forum! Forum owners are making too much money off advertising though is my guess. The less bullshitting the less link clicks… :)

Or they could have focused on fuel economy. Every time gas prices rise people complain about the poor fuel consumption for such a little truck, which isn’t so little anymore.
