My fog lights are too bright. What are some ways I can dim them?

    Hi everyone,

I purchased some Rigid yellow fog lights a couple years ago, but haven't used them much because they are blinding... I was thinking of buying some amber covers to snap on top, but I'm not sure how much they will dim the light. Maybe spray the covers with something? If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears. I'd like to use these without blinding others.

    Item in question:

Sounds like something is wrong with them, or you didn't end up with the SAE version or something (by accident or mistake)....I had those in the SAE version you linked to for several years on my Frontier and they were not blinding at all. They were great lights and I left them on so they would be on with the headlights every night.

@Freefolk - how are they too bright/blinding? Are you blinding other drivers or are YOU seeing too much light reflected back at you?

I would check that you have adjusted them to tilt down to not blind everyone - IF they are actually indeed "fog" lights that have a usable cutoff.

If they aren't fog and more of a flood, I would just sell them and get a better set like the Diode Dynamics SS3 Sport.

Cameras don’t ever capture anything right. Take pics up close of the lights off so we can see the lenses. Also show us them against a wall. There should be a sharp horizontal cutoff.

Ah shoot. I'll get those pics tomorrow.

What do you mean by sharp horizontal cut off? The light on the wall from the fog lights will create a noticable color difference from the headlights if they are too bright?

By cutoff, I mean you should see a very flat yellow pattern on the wall. The top of the pattern should be sharp, and immediately above it should be wall or garage door or whatever you point at. The rigid fogs should create a thin yellow line on the wall.

    Similar to this pic.

Rigid literally has the best cut off in the industry, zero chance they are blinding by fault of the lamp. I ran those very fogs. Looks like in your photos the fogs are not aimed correctly, they appear to be aimed up into the eyes of oncoming drivers causing the blinding scenario. They should be aimed for a 4" down at the cut off at 25'.

Thanks everyone. I did the wall test BLtheP mentioned and the lights were aimed too high. I adjusted them and they seem better.
