Ya . Your inertial collision sensor went off probably form a hard bottom out . It happens, aw well ... Just have insurance fix it and get the new shocks like I said :) .

I have seen this happen in person (passenger), on a ford ranger and f150. Near that area actually (ocotillo wells) and it was from a very hard bottom out through big woops . It happens when you go trophy truck mode . Probably not as common for people who respect their vehicles...

It's not an overreaction, just a simple statement of fact. If you're going to lie about what happened in order to get a free repair there's really no difference than if you stole the money from someone to pay for it. Should the airbags be designed differently is an entirely separate discussion but Toyota lists the limits of the system in the owners manual.

He’s 18 and just regurgitating what he reads online about airbag deployment being an automatic total loss.

    Just a little info:

"Side Airbag Sensor Assembly: Detect intensity of side collision through electrical deceleration sensor."

"Side Collisions: The side and curtain shield airbags are in case of side collisions. The side airbags are installed in the seatbacks of the driver seat and the front passenger seat, and the curtain shield airbags are installed in the upper areas of the right and left center pillars. If a side airbag sensor assembly detects an impact, the airbag sensor assembly causes the side and curtain shield airbags to be deployed simultaneously."

Looks like Toyota can look into what caused the airbags to deploy as well. Or, you could take a look yourself if you have Techstream. See attached file.

What fuse do you pull? The 1 ign fuse? How does the fuel injection system operate with out that fuse and do the brakes still operate with the anti lock system no operational?

minor, TRD skid plate, front recovery points, Regken mud flaps, rear diff breather, AC drain pipe extended. Upgraded sound with active sub woofer, tonneau cover, CB radio.
Can puy my 2c on that: Side curtain airbags usually deploying with reach of certain angle, 15 to 30 degrees on board, left or right. It was very common case with Nissan X Terra,
and then Nissan have a TSB for that, it was recall. Probably the same with Tacoma, I will recommend contact dealership, and keep all of us posted.
    Good luck!

    very expensive to repair

no less should be done by a certified tech..................................if confidence of proper deployment

at a later date /incidence is a serious consideration

The main problem with that is that Toyota Care will know the lat and long of where the air bags deployed, middle of the sand dunes.
My neighbors GMC had the side air bags go on him just turning around on a logging road when he got off angle on steep embankment.

I am setting up for the Baja 250 run and if I can simply pull a fuse, I would really love to know what fuse to pull?

Probably came down and slammed bump to hard, 45 mph on sand with a stock truck will do that.

Did you have the truck towed or did you pop the airbags and drive it home?

    Reserected from the dead.
Just disconnect all the yellow sheathed wires that go into the SRS UCU. Makes the system dead, but you can still drive it, but will have no seat belt retraction in the event of a crash.

You can have the ECU reset after rebuilding the system. You have to remove the ECU from the vehicle. I haven't done a 3rd gen, but I expect its similar to a 2nd gen.

The dealer is not going to care how you set off the bags and they are not going to go to the trouble of retrieving your crash data. That's only used in cases involving you killing someone.
