Yard work beckons so I will be signing off but I will check back later. Thank you for those with helpful and insightful comments. To the others who just want to poke and prod, thanks for nothing.

Nothing about buying an automobile qualifies as an "investment"--unless one's definition of investment includes losing money...

Sell it privately to get the most you can get for it. 2017 TRD off roads and sports are selling at the dealership for $34-35k with 7-9k miles on them in my area.
    http://www.buckhannontoyota.com/use...+Double+Cab+5+Bed+V6+4x4+MT-5TFCZ5AN9HX050909

That truck does not have the premium and tech package and it's a manual so it's a pretty stripped down base sport model. Your truck probably had the tech package since you paid $40k for it and it probably retails for $1-2k more.

Try selling it yourself by listing on car gurus as a private seller and craigslist. You will get what you owe on it and can get your full size truck.
DO NOT trade it in at the dealership. They are going to give you $5k less than it's retail market value and offer you $29-30k as a trade in.

Sell it as quick as you can while the resale value is still high since you are worried this recall is going to destroy the resale value.

Recall has already been in the news, so any resale value effect is already in place.

Think it is already too late. OP's diff is leaking, and the dealerships probably don't have the parts to repair.

Who is going to pay top $$ on a vehicle that has a stop order, and shouldn't be used?

    I'm paying $2659 in interest if I keep my loan the whole 60 months. I financed $26k @ 3.9%.

Should have financed through a credit union instead of Toyota.

Man 0% interest would be awesome. Why Toyota stop offering that on their trucks. They only offer 0% on the boring appliance cars like the Camry and corolla that I don't care for.

Yeah, im paying an extra $100 on top my regular payment to pay it off in 48 months instead of 60. At least that will be a whole year of no interest.

Look on the bright side - even if it does take it down some (which in the long run, I doubt), your resale value will still beat the snot out of a comparable Ford or GM product.

I have a 2016 Sport (pictured here). Access Cab MT. Had a minor transmission issue (which they fixed in 30 minutes) am over 28,000 now and NOTHING has gone wrong. Am now looking at selling my 2010 Camry (also with an MT) and buying a new 4Runner (my wife's primary ride) - Clay

If you can deal with an ugly truck, get a Ridgeline--top of the pack.

That's because they have to in order to move the "boring appliance cars"--apparently there are sufficient number of truck buyers willing to go into debt for 7 years that they do not have to offer incentives (BTW I am sure all are aware it's not really 0%, the "lost" interest is at least partially rolled into the selling price).

Never, ever, finance through the dealer on a new or newer car. Go to your bank; or better yet credit union; and get pre-approved for $x.xx, then go to the dealer and tell them you are a "cash" buyer. Or even better yet drive a "paid for" shìtbox--like the '83 Corona I listed earlier--and put what would be the "affordable monthly payment" on the dream car n the bank for 3 to 4 years--then be a real cash buyer.

I realise much of the above sounds like it's coming from a geezer who always has a better way--that's because it is. But a great big part of my "better way" is the way I would have done it if I could do it over again...

Any newly joined member who posts about a problem is immediately placed on the White Knights suspected Troll list.

If you read the thread where the guy's differential locked up on the highway, they were all but demanding the GPS coordinates where it happened so that they could go look for skid marks as proof.

It's just the way it is on this forum.

Ignore them and good luck getting your truck issues resolved.

I have been on the fence about buying a 3rd gen for almost a year now and the 4 different ones I've driven have all made me decide to wait a bit longer.

Now I am getting thisclose to just buying a Frontier Pro4X.

I came real close to buying a 2011 Frontier, roughly comparable (miles and condition) to the '09 DCSB SR5 TRD I ended up buying, also "certified used" (meaning they guaranty it's used?) and roughly the same $$ ($18k give or take)--but just couldn't see myself in a Datsun...
