I've been thinking about getting a muffler for my 2001 2.7L Double Cab Tacoma since I inherited it from my dad after he passed away last March. Does anybody have experience with a muffler on their four cylinder?

I've been watching Magnaflow and Flowmaster videos on Youtube, however, they've all been installed on V6 versions of typically newer or second generation Tacomas; bringing me into doubt about whether or not installing a muffler on my truck would even be noticeable. Anybody with some four cylinder muffler wisdom, please help!

    Thank you,

    Hi Asian,

Sorry to hear about your Dad... I drove my Dad's car for many years after he died, took good care of it, and it served me well.

I've done a lot of experimenting on my 2012 2.7 exhaust, and did dyno runs with 3 different 2.7 mufflers just to see how they would perform. While they were actually all pretty close, the Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow logged a slight edge...

    RED: Stock 2.7 muffler
    BLUE: Magnaflow straight through muffler
    GREEN: Flowmaster chambered muffler
    all_3_zps45fc619a_bb15193777cf255efff0bc857df31fc495c62106.jpg
The stock exhaust system is actually very well designed for the 2.7, but if you like more sound just pick your favorite muffler and have it welded onto the stock pipes.

I'm presently running the Flowmaster because it had the best dyno test results, and this is how it sounds...

Awesome.. Thanks. I had seen on autoanything that they had a reg cab one but then I couldn't find one on their website. I love Gibson sound, had one on my FJ and it was great. Best thing about a cat back is if it's too loud you can just put the old one back on

    They already do. :)
In dyno testing, the stock 2.7 muffler performs almost the same as Magnaflow and Flowmaster. The only big difference is the sound.

Condolences. But awesome you got his truck. Flowmaster has a bit more sound but I like a more mellow tone like my magnaflow cat and muffler. Bias, yes. But i noticed on my 98' 2.7 that performance works well when the whole system is breathing freely, ie drop in k&n wth deckplate mod.

Thank you for all of the replies and sorry about mine being so late! All of you have been extremely helpful to me, unfortunately I've just been very busy recently, sorry.

Simply put, after tallying up the responses I have four definitive flowmaster recommendations along with two for magnaflow. Because I am looking for something that sounds good I'm currently leaning towards getting a flowmaster 40 series, possibly a 50, although, I'm still not all too sure what the difference is between the two. From what I can tell in tooter's post, the flowmaster 50 sounds amazing and with his data it's also encouraging to see that there is in fact a slight performance gain while using the muffler.

Again, thank you all for your help! Now I just need to figure out whether I should go with a 40 or 50 series.
