I'm going to cut off my muffler and some pipe and put in 2-1/2 inch pipe. Do I need to do anything with the O2 sensors. I heard you need to move them down more after doing this.

Getting more air into the engine and minimizing exhaust restrictions will improve HP. Cutting out the muffler won't help. You will just end up with a loud truck that won't be pleasant to drive.

I don't see why you would have to move them for 98% of intents and purposes.

No. You don't need to move your o2s. The 2nd o2 is right after the cat, so cut anywhere after that.

It's almost like we all like different things...

Don't think you'll pass inspection if you're in the "bay area"

Actually California doesn't have the traditional safety inspections most people think of when you talk inspection. They just have smog check. They don't give a shit about cracked windshields, bumpers, turn signals, doors, e-brake, or anything other than the emissions equipment. Mufflers are walking the line but if it's after the cat, doesn't throw a check engine light, the O2 sensors remain functional, and the tech can reach the tail pipe with the sniffer I don't think this is an auto fail. I'm not 100% sure and it will probably depend on the smog tech. Also it's only every two years in major counties (and only when you sell a vehicle in many smaller counties).

That said I still think it's a dumb idea and he can still get a ticket.

Then buy a good stereo. You can always turn it down, exhaust without muffler, not so much.

There's plenty of mufflers that will do that for you. Without making it obnoxious to drive and hear. Do a few searches in the 1st gen section and you'll find some.

I've have a flowmaster on my '85 and it makes my 22r sound pretty good.

I think magnaflow makes a straight through exhaust if your looking for improved flow.

Well, there is certainly a visual inspection that is kind of a catch all. I got hassled (and failed) because my K&N didn't have a sticker. Yes, a sticker. Guy even told me it'll pass, I just needed to call K&N and get a new sticker.

CA law is fairly clear on the subject of noise (95 dB), even though it is generally poorly enforced (my conspiracy theory is because CHP and local LEOs have their own straight piped Harleys and don't want to give themselves tickets, but that's just me...).

    https://www.bar.ca.gov/FormsPubs/Fa...ehicle_Exhaust_Noise_Level_Certification.html

So yeah, you need a muffler.

If you want your truck to sound like someone with emphysema gargling corn syrup, be my guest and cut the muffler off.

Put in a V8 then. High revving V6's in a car with a tuned exhaust and maybe a turbo can sound good to my ears. Maybe even in a street truck. Without the low grunt of an eight cylinder engine trucks tend to sound wussy to my ears - if you're set on making it sound louder or deeper / "better" get another muffler for sure rather than cut the thing off. You'll sound like a hill billy ricer without one. :p

It doesn't help that the 3.4 is a 60 degree V. This can be an uphill battle trying to get a very deep sound out of it. If it were a 90' V it would be a little easier
