Sorry to start a new muffler thread, but there are tons of threads with no definitive answer I could find (didn't want to search all night!).

Is there an aftermarket, bolt-in replacement muffler for an 08 access cab 4.0 4WD, under $300?

I'm looking for #14 in this diagram.

    Thanks so much.

Search for Cat back. Several companies make them, so you should have lots of options.

Im in the same boat as the OP. My muffler has about 1" round hole in it on the back side between the 2 mounts. I cant put any exhaust tape on it because of the location. Ive tried just putting some quick steel and muffler paste over it but it blows off every few months so I need to pony up some money and get a new one. Im not looking to change the sound or anything, I just need a replacement. Seems like all the lower priced replacements arent direct bolt on and need to be welded or clamped on. Ones that I find that have the flange to bolt up to the stock pipe say theyre for the 4 cylinder models, are the mufflers interchangeable between the 4 and 6?. Id like to try to find something I can just bolt on in my driveway but between rock auto and ebay I havent found it.

Walker lists a direct fit muffler for our truck. Part number should be 56204 for the muffler and tailpipe and 54694 for the inlet pipe. I have not seen it in person to verify the fit but I did put a complete Walker exhaust system on my last truck and the fit was close enough to work with some persuasion.

I think Bosal makes a direct replacement that is a 1 piece all welded up. Walker might make one as well, you need to check their websites. I see factory exhausts listed on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist pretty often so check your local listings and you won't have to deal with shipping. The Bosal might be available through your local NAPA.

Yeah, I agree. My searches came up with 4 cyl. model, toyota's original, or others that just cost too much. I ended up going to a Midas & had my muffler cut out & a generic muffler welded in. It sounds a little deeper, but it was only $200.

I thought about buying a generic muffler and having it welded in but was worried there isnt much good metal left to weld to on the existing pipes.

Yeah it looks like with that one I would still have to get the muffler welded to that inlet pipe. I was hoping for a 1 piece direct bolt on. If I have to go the weld route then so be it, just thought there might be something out there. Ive checked my local craigslist for a replacement with no luck.

You should be able to clamp on the muffler/tailpipe to the intermediate pipe. I've used clamp together exhaust systems on a lot of vehicles. One thing I like to do is cut slots about 1/2 to 3/4" into the inlet pipe to help with it's ability to clamp to the pipe being inserted but it also makes it easier to remove if you need to make adjustments or swap out parts. Welding isn't usually needed unless you can't get it to clamp together tight enough. Plus, the welded area is usually the first to rust.

It's clamped like @JL8Jeff says. Walker in the system diagram I posted shows it, a 2-1/4" clamp their part number 35336. Walker probably has their reasons for that, one is to make it short enough to ship easily but also to allow some range of adjustment for their tolerances (these things are not exactly made to NASA-spec) and differences in trucks.

BTW, I'm not suggesting this is the best way to go for just a muffler. The whole system was cheaper than getting a muffler shop to bend one up on my old truck, though.

What you said was going to be my most likely scenario if I couldnt find a direct bolt on. Get the new Muffler/tail pipe piece, see where I need to cut the intermediate pipe at length wise, cut a couple notches in the new pipe to clamp better, slide it over the intermediate and clamp it on. As long as the intermediate pipe isnt too brittle. Then again a new one is only about 25 bucks.

I figured it was a shipping issue. From the beginning of the intermediate pipe to the end of the tail pipe is pretty long since I have a long bed double cab

Thanks for the input guys. Glad to see I wasnt the only one with this question. Probably going to go with this one

So it looks like the Bosal uses a clamp on intermediate pipe as well. Check you local NAPA for the Bosal, I think they can get them and you don't pay shipping. The Bosal is aluminized though so it might not last as long.

I replaced the muffler on my truck with this a couple of years ago. I didn't get the inlet pipe but just reused my old one. Two things: 1. I had to tweak the front hanger just slightly for a perfect fit and 2. the inlet on the muffler is the same size as the inlet pipe so it won't just slip together. I had a short piece of pipe with an ID the same as the OD of the inlet pipe and the muffler inlet. I just slipped them together inside the "sleeve", clamped them, and it worked perfectly.

I thought I noticed the walker was stainless so that was a selling point. From the pic it looks like the end of the bosal is a little larger than the rest of the pipe, so maybe itll slide on the intermediate pipe. Thanks for the Napa heads up, I wouldnt have thought to look there, there is only 1 or 2 in my area.

As soon as I read that got the duh moment. They make the muffler and tailpipe universal and sell two intermediate pipes of different lengths to fit the 127" wheelbase (Access Cab and DCSB) and 140" wheelbase like yours. There's probably a 3rd intermediate option for the regular cabs.

I figured the Walker was aluminized steel, too. If it's stainless that would be nice since it looks to be about $100 on Amazon for the muffler & tailpipe part.

I wonder if the Walker is a stainless muffler but aluminized pipe. It's hard to tell for sure.

The muffler and pipe are all aluminized. I've had it on my truck for a couple of years now and it's holding up well.
