Move DIY bumper

Has anyone here done one yet. I’m about to pul the trigger but can’t really get any good pics of one.

@Jerneyman welded one up the other day for a Tundra. Everything looked good.

 

That is correct. Built a front and rear bumper for a 2007 Tundra I believe was the year. Everything fit fairly well. Just make sure to use the truck as a jig to ensure proper gap between truck and bumper. I did end up filling a gap about 1/2 inch in between plates in order to maintain a good distance off the truck but it should be manageable to fill if you’re good with a welder.

Be forewarned though, if you buy one configured with hoops or any tubing, you have to cope the tubing yourself and cut compound angles on the end of the tubing to weld it to the bumper face.

I can take some pictures of them tomorrow if you’d like. What are you looking for specifically? All of them are built structurally the same just reconfigured to fit different models of vehicle. It’s especially prevalent in their rear bumpers.

 

Cool thanks guys. I’m a rig welder with layout And fab knowledge. If I had time I’d design and cut my own out. I have access to a plasma table too. Really just need the plans but as I rarely get a day off I’ll get the base bumper and modify as I go for lights or extra bars etc.

Are you happy with the overall shape and strength after it’s all welded up?

 

Over all it’s a strong bumper however if you’re doing anything like wheeling your truck, I would gusset the bumper internally and maybe beef up the mounting locations. It’s a great bumper to build from as far as fit up is concerned though.

 

I don’t do wheeling in the traditional sense. I’m out in the oil field all day with it. Occasionally bump gates and hit deer on the hwy. I was thinking I’d box it up on the “wings” under the headlights and maybe make air tanks out of them. Then maybe build a pipe gusset back to the frame to really beef it up.

 

Sounds like a plan. Should be good and strong after all that.

 

Pulled the trigger last night. Should’ve here next week. I got the precision front with no extras.
