I'm pretty sure they can come up with a way to add sound proofing to a non-carpet material - I think they are pretty smart people. I can see the scuffing being an issue, but not all materials would scuff easily. If you don't want scuffs, buy some cheap liners to go on top; makes cleaning even easier; hose the liners, hose where the liners missed the dirt! Scrubbing mud out of mouse fur sucks. but again, that's probably just me.

I had a Ford Explorer Sport Trac (Explorer SUV with a 4' bed instead of covered). That had a non-carpet flooring that was very easy to keep clean (but I don't know what the material was). After 10 years of ownership, the only problem with it was a small indent where my foot rested under the gas pedal.

It has some material under it for sound proofing. It wasn't quiet, but it was less so than my current Tacoma is.

Did you make up the "mouse fur" name for that carpet or is that commonplace? TIL if so. Honda element has a plastic floor. Serves a solid purpose I guess but carpet is more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. Element floor looks cheap.

I think the carpet is just much cheaper than trying to soundproof vinyl floor.

Mine only cost $110 for the dynamat roll. Approx $550 for the flooring. That's not too bad.

I put my weathertech mats over the top. It's pretty awesome.

The best interior I ever had in a vehicle was the Herculiner in my TJ. Perfectly functional. Then again, a vehicle is just a tool to me. I don’t care about noise or heat or anything else.

My problem isn't with the carpet. It's that my only TRD OR interior color option was black. It just really shows up the dirt. My 2004 interior was gray and it looked much cleaner. Maybe I should start a TW thread griping about that :jerkoff:

I don't mind too much either, but the passengers tend to complain about stuff.

As far as I know Dodge (Ram) is the only OEM with carpet delete as an option. My last Ram had it with the rubber / vinyl floor and I would take it every time over carpet. As far as slippery when wet BULLSHIT. This is speaking from years of experience.

Carpet is the stupidest option going. But remember most vehicles are built and shipped with customers making the decision on a unit on the lot. Very few are ordered in terms of total numbers so as a dealer do you roll the dice for carpet or without carpet?

If all vehicles were made to order by buyer specifications I think OEM’s might be surprised at how many would take the carpet delete option. I would. Heck I would if that was the only way to get carpet delete.

It’s the only cost effective way to cover a floor and help with sound and climate control. Rip it out and see what winter does. My 01 has no mouse fur, and when winter comes, it’s bananas. There are probably better ways, but they cost more.

I've had multiple trucks and SUV's over the years. About 1/2 had vinyl floors, about 1/2 had carpet. It ain't a big deal either way. I never felt the vinyl flooring was any louder, it has padding under the vinyl. I don't worry about getting the carpet dirty. It's a truck, I get in with muddy boots on all the time. I won't spend the money for the high priced floor mats, the $15 rubber mats at Walmart work just fine. My guess is that it is cheaper to put carpet in than vinyl.

Don't kid yourself about hosing out a vinyl floor. There are too many electronics in modern trucks to even think about that. Plus water will get trapped under the vinyl and rust holes in the floorboards, it'll dry faster and easier if carpet gets wet. BTDT and had to pull out all the flooring and patch rusted holes. Back in the day I had Jeeps and a IH Scout that had bare metal floors. They were a little loud. The Jeeps come with drain holes to let water out. I drilled holes in the floor of the Scout to let water out.

If they complain I have no problem telling them that they can walk.

Then again, in the Jeep I couldn’t hear anything over the tire noise (Swamper LTBs). Not even whiny passengers.
