Hey all I've got a Gobi rack on order so I've been looking at lighting for it. I've decided I want four round LED lights on the rack as I like the look but I dont know which beam pattern.

I was looking at a set of LED's that say "driving" pattern, but I am concerned that the beam will be too large and reflect off my hood. I know that spot lights would probably be better for hood glare but I'd rather have the all around light of the driving light.

So basically, will driving pattern LED's work on my roof without blinding me off my hood?

Depends on the light and the pattern. For example if you use KC's Pro 6 Gravity lights, the LEDs point backward into the reflector so all light output is reflected for outstanding focus and light control, meaning no uncontrolled light leaves the assembly, so there is no/minimal light spill on the hood even with a driving pattern. If you use an LED light with open bucket reflectors so that you can see the emitters, they will have uncontrolled light leaving the assembly, meaning regardless of pattern you will get light on the hood. In an open bucket reflector design, the spot pattern will have less hood glare than a driving pattern.

I should of known Master of lighting would be lurking here :D

Makes sense. I was looking at the Hella Valuefit 500's with the driving pattern because I'm cheap but I may go with those KC's you posted. They look a lot better than the cheapo Hella's

The 500 Value Fits use the open bucket reflectors, so yeah they will result in hood glare. For round lights on the roof, the KC Pro 6 is the way to go. I have a pair in driving pattern for my truck. They also have the highest peak intensity of any SAE driving light I am aware of. Check out my quoted posts in post #2177 for some initial tests and comparisons.
