I've been looking at new wheels to put on my Tacoma and was really set on the Fuel Krank wheels in a 17x9 until I realized that the 265/70/17 trail grapplers that I want to put them on are only rated up to a 8.5 inch wide wheel? Would it be that big of a stretch on the tire if I still mounted them? And would anyone still recommend that I mount them? I've heard from a few people that it would be fine to do but I wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks.

I used to mount 265/35/18 on a 8" wide rim on my evo. I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it was like a 225 tire on a 8.5" it would be stretched fitment. But a 265 on 8.5" wide shouldn't be an issue

You realize 8.5" on a 9" rim is only 1/4" per side, which is not a stretch on any tire.
Do it you'll be fine, stop trying to over think things.

Just don't say anything if you are having a tire shop mount them.
One shop refused to mount a tires for me once because the wheel was a 1/2 inch wider than the tire mfg recommended. Said at high speed it could become a issue or some b.s. like that.
Took it to another shop and they mounted them.

Arb front bumper, warn winch, All Pro rear bumper, OME up front, OME and All Pro Standard in Back, ARB locker, 34 x 10.5 KO2's, 17" Level 8 Trackers, and fancy single piece driveshaft.
The drawback to doing that is you get less protection from rock and curb rash. If you didn't go off road, it might not matter. But seeing where you live, you probably do. Personally, I'd rather have the wheel at the narrow end of the width range for the tire. When aired down, it seems like the bead would be harder to break loose on a narrower rim. That might be my imagination, but it's something to think about.

Also, the mfgr could probably void the tire warranty if they wanted to if the rim is outside the spec for the tire. If the dealer notices, they probably won't install the tires because it opens them up to liability. So there are a few issues.
