I am looking for a way to safely and aesthetically extend the floor area in order to fit my KTM 690r dual sport in the bed. It barely, and I mean barely fits in with the tail gait down but any rearward movement at all and the bike could fall off; not ideal. I need another foot or so in order to be safe. Also wondering if the tailgate itself is robust enough to handle the weight.

Any and all ideas are helpful, thanks.

Angle it in the truck instead of just straight in. Driver corner to rear passenger corner.

I saw a 690 Enduro R in the back of a Honda Ridgeline yesterday. It was angled as above. At the local KTM shop

Is the truck in your pic a 5 or 6 foot bed?

By far the best option I’ve seen is to use a section of C channel (or U depending on where you come from). Extend it out passed the bed, sit the bike in that. weld some ears on the front of it so you can use the front bed bolts to hole it down. That is some custom work, but it’s by far the safest and best way to carry a bike in a short bed. Sideways is ok, but not for long distances, since the straps are uneven lengths and different at angles, plus tying the back is a pain. Personally I wouldn’t trust the Tacoma tailgate without reinforcement, (like the C channel), but there seem to be plenty who haven’t had any issue with the tailgate on a 3rd gen, Loads of 2nd gen failures with bikes though.

i've carried 2 Husky/ KTM 450/501's. Your 690 has a 59.7 wheelbase, my husaberg fe450 has a 58.7 wheelbase and fits with room to spare.

Angle the front tire and wedge between tire well and back wall. That'll shorten it up a bit. As far as rearward movement with them strapped down there shouldnt be any. I also run a

at the rear across the entire tail to keep gear bags etc in. My old 350 and 501 in, see how the front wheel it turned, shortens bikes up alot and has no negative on stability.

Just got back from a dirtbike trip. Just drop the tailgate abd throw the bike in, should be more then enough room. Also could invest in a bed extender.

Not applicable to my scenario since the rear wheel sits right on the end of the tailgate. Thant leaves the remaining 50% of the tire past the edge of the tailgate. The extender would interfere. Thanks though.

And...the bike won’t fit at an angle with the 5’ bed since I have a Leitner Designs bedrock in it. Also, this is a dual sport 690 which is considerably longer wheelbase than a typical dirt bike. Throwing it in the back and driving isn’t safe.

I had a Ridgeline prior to the Tacoma and it also had a 5’ bed. The difference, I discovered post purchase, is the Ridgeline tailgate is far more robust, and taller than the Tacoma’s. The result is a longer base to secure the bike once the tailgate is lowered.

Interesting. I can see this working with a folding ramp turned upside down. I could load the bike using 2 ramps, 1 for walking, and then use the walking ramp to secure the bike, and remove the loading ramp for stowage. Really helpful, thanks a lot. Any suggestions as to where I could source c- channel?

Unfortunately I can’t angle it quite enough with the bedrock for me to feel that it is securely loaded. I do like that Motorsport though...will purchase today..Thanks.
