I bought the above filter wrench for my oil changes. It works great, but too great. After taking the filter housing off, the canister is stuck in the wrench. I have to put the wrench in a vice to remove the canister. When I install the filter, I use a cheap wrench with so much play that it slides off after tightening the canister. I feel that if I use the Motiv, I'll never get if off the canister. Does anyone have this same issue? I tried to put oil in the wrench before removal, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

When did you buy this filter wrench? I ask because it appears they have changed the design since I bought mine according to Amazon.

Amazon.com: Motivx Tools Oil Filter Wrench for Toyota Camry, Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, RAV4 and More - 64mm 14 Flute Precision CNC Machined Aluminum Oil Filter Removal Tool : Automotive
If yours looks like the picture of the current product instead of the bottom of the second picture showing the discontinued product I can understand your dilemma. I would not use it either.

    My old style works fine.

I've only had my truck long enough to do 2 oil changes , but the Motiv wrench also did what you are describing on both changes. I found that you can either hold the filter housing in your hand and turn the Motive wrench backward, (loosen direction), and it will slide off with some wiggling. Or- Leave it on the housing, and after the new filter element has been installed and torqued to the 18 ft lbs, -same thing- a little turn of the wrench in the loosen direction and it slides off.
It seems to have a very close tolerance fit.

Oil film on the surface of the filter creates a mild "suction". Tap at the tool edge and work it off, like you would with bolts and nuts on a socket. Then use a degreaser on the filter housing and the tool interior to remove that problem

I have the older discontinued MotivX wrench and have never encountered this problem.

I have one that I bought in late ‘23. It does get stuck on the housing when I remove it from the truck, but it comes back off when torquing it back on with a new filter element. The only real problem is that I have to install the drain cover with the housing installed, which is definitely trickier than doing on the bench.

It's a tight fitting tool. A couple of smacks with soft hammer and it will come off.

I do have the newer one. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'm not due for a few more thousands miles and I'll try something different.

    This and that
I have had the same issues. Cleared up this last change. Just not so tight. I was worried about my canister so I bought a backup spare, just happens to be the aluminum one.

I would also get your crush washers from Toyota dealership. I ordered some from Amazon before and they sent the wrong sizes. Whatever you do do not use your old washers.

Mine was purchased in 22 and it is a snug fit. I've learned to just use it to loosen the canister so while there are still plenty of threads engaged I'm able to unstick the wrench from the canister vs trying to fight it off while the canister is completely free.

The Motivx grips the filter housing at the strongest point ... not the side-pinching wrenches built for solid filters instead of the filter housing. But if you insist ... good luck.

If you are changing the filter with the engine hot this will happen due to the plastic housing expanding.
