Most aftermarket wheels look meh on 3rd gens

    This is purely an opinion.

I've always been a wheel whore on all of my cars/trucks; it isn't uncommon for me to go through 5+ sets of rims to get the offset and design I like and settle on a design. I'll spend a lot of time going through forums, catalogs, and research wheel diameter and offsets for the right fitment. It costs extra, but I mean the right custom rims can really set a vehicle off. I've had vehicles sponsored by wheel manufacturers, mostly because I'm a wheel whore and I'll take a lot of pictures for them.

I've spent a good 2 months since I've had my 2018 to find rims that I feel really match the aggressive and modern styling. I've deduced the following for the 2016+:

    • Fake beadlocks are fine and can look really cool on some trucks. Lipped wheels are fine and can look really cool on some trucks. For some reason, these styles don't work on this truck. Both the beadlocks and the lipped wheels look dated on the 3rd gen. They look older than the truck's styling if that makes sense. Most wheels on the market look at home on the 2nd gens, but like they belong on a second gen. It confused me, because I am usually a sucker for a method or other modern design but I see them on the 3rd gen and they look dated to me. It's like putting Weld Super Single IIs or Weld Velocity on a modern truck; they look amazing for their era's trucks, but dated on modern trucks.
    • OEM wheels in comparison look very good. The pro wheels, TRD offroad and sport wheels look good. I think it's because the wheels have a flat face with a little concave; that is the center of the wheel flows to the face of the wheel. The 3rd gen looks better IMO with a flatter face wheel that flows from the center without a lip. These designs typically aren't complimentary to a beadlock. There really isn't much out there in this design. This truck is the first vehicle I've owned in 20 years where I can't find a design I like better than OEM design.
You may agree or disagree, but I'm wondering if anyone has found a modern, relatively flat face design that fits this description. If you have, please share!

I'm glad someone finally said it. I cant find one I like better than OEM. I like the SCS Ray's and Method 305s because I think bronze would look great on an MGM. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is because of all the points you just made. I wish they made a PRO wheel in a dark bronze.

TE37 or RPT1 are my favorite wheels on 3rd gens... I don't think that there are many higher end options that look attractive.

The closest thing I've found but it isn't quite right is the Mickey Thompson Sidebiter 2, which coincidentally looks pretty close to the pro wheel. This is the closest I have found to liking.mickeythompson_sidebiter_II_wheel_5lug_satin_black_17x9-1000_3014.jpg

I think 4R Pro 17" Wheels look best which is what I put on my Cement OR.

I'm a big fan of Enkeis and Volks too for sure. They look like street tuner wheels to me, which is clearly their inspiration.

    Flame suit on.

I have never really liked most aftermarket wheels.

    I generally prefer OEM wheels.

Feels good to say it out loud.

For the record, this is where I landed. I kept the OEM TRD OR wheels and added Spidertrax 1.25" spacers for a more aggressive fitment.

What about Black Rhinos? They make some military looking shit that's pretty badass. My truck couldn't pull them off...yet.

that's what I've been leaning towards. Wait a while for OEM to get beat up and by that time maybe some new styles will be out.

Decided to powder coat my silver 2018 Sport wheels gloss black to buy time until I find something else. Turned out better than I imagined so I am not in a hurry anymore. Did not like the original Sport until they went all black. Still like the stock OR wheels.

If only Toyota would learn how to make a wheel that's wider than 7".

I'm not totally stoked on them. They make some with sand accents that, on the right truck, would look bad ass.

You could buy a set and have them refinished. I had the OEM wheels on my old RX-8 powder coated root beer bronze and they looked amazing.

Don't get me wrong; I've spent tons in aftermarket wheels and they are the first mod I usually do.
