A lot of ranges don't let people shoot steel core because it does more damage to the back stop/targets. Or because they make arbitrary rules so you're forced to buy their overpriced ammo.
My range doesn't allow it on the indoor range or on club-owned steel targets.

Yup its wild man, me and my buddies were joking around the other day that if your getting robbed at gun point in Los Angeles and you shoot and kill in self defense your better off saying you were the one that was trying to rob the robber instead of saying you defended yourself lmao.

Scroll down to Poland and look at 21/72
If you still had the lid I could tell a lot more, but I'm assuming that's long gone.

Thats a sweet little chart, I just spend about an hour looking at all the different types. It seems like black/red/green are pretty standard for armor piercing/incendiary/tracer colors. I wonder if thats still the case nowadays.

That whole site has a ton of info, with some time you can figure out what every mark on your Mosin means.
In my experience the color codes have stayed pretty consistent over the years and between different countries.

    I have a few....

    Rack 1 September 3 2012.jpg

    PU Snipers May 12 2013.jpg

Oh for the good old days on $60 Mosins. I've sold off two of the PU snipers - the top and bottom have gone on to new homes (the top one is actually a faux sniper with a newly manufactured scope). I shot in some Vintage Sniper Rifle competitions with the two center ones - a 1942 Izhevsk and a 1943 Tula. Both were ex-snipers that I matched with proper-year original scopes. There is (was?) a gunsmith out in Arizona who would tap the old scope holes for the mount. Truly accurate work. He also did the bolts so if you are interested I can try to find his info - may still be able to supply a Mosin turned down bolt.

My oldest is a 1925 Tula Ex-Dragoon - that's one I got for $60. I also had - have now sold - a Finn M39 that was built off an 1897 French contract Mosin.

I still have a bunch of Russian ammo, but I also started reloading, especially for competitions. Pretty easy to hand-load the 7.62X54r. And, these rifles can be tack drivers. This was a final zero for my '42 Izhevsk before a competition. 100 yards. Hand loads and I mixed in randomly 3 rounds that had a slightly lower powder load.
First 5 rounds at the lower left target, adjusted and then fired 5 more. Did the same with two 5 round strings on the lower right - you can see I got two of the lighter loads in those strings. Then I moved to the upper red bull - 5 rounds with the final of the random loads. Not too shabby for an old warhorse.

Mind sharing your load for the Mosin? I was going to develop one but found that PPU made some very good Match x54r at a very good price, and the brass is re loadable. But I'm starting to run low.
I did make some fun loads with 220gr(?) lead cast gas check bullets and 10gr(?) of Unique (need to double check those numbers). Had to use 500m sight to hit at 100m, but no recoil and almost hearing safe.

Mine is not a stock setup, so I did non stock stuff.
I cut off the original bolt handle, I then cut the head off a 3/8" x 3" grade 8 bolt heated it up to bend it to the angle I wanted and welded it onto the bolt. I smoothed out the area to make it purdy and added a threaded single knurl bolt handle.
I made it so it easily cleared a RSI scope mount and be comfortable to cycle.

Crappy picture, but it's the only one I have. I'll try to remember to get a better one when I go to town next week.

Probably one of the best aftermarket Mosin setups I've seen. What kind of stock/chassis?

Stock is an Archangel Opfor, Timney trigger, RSI scope base bedded to the receiver, shortened and bore centric threaded, scope is a Simmons Whitetail Classic mil-dot 6.5-20x50.

Have you shot it with a can? Always wondered what a mosin would sound like with one.

I have not. I had thought about getting one for it, but decided to eventually only have 9mm, 5.56, and 22lr. So, this one will eventually go away and I couldn't justify the extra cost for a can for it.

mine is 1930 Tula hex matching numbers....have all the stock stuff but did archangel stock, timney trigger, muzzle break, scope with 5 and 10 shot mags. Got the can of 440 rounds, bayonet and cleaning tools/oil can. Paid $235 for the original setup with extras and got to pick thru a crate. I also piled up non-corrosive primer ammo for quite awhile before prices and supply went super nuts....

Doesn't help you much in Cali, but those rounds are steel core. Tracer rounds have a green tip. 7.62x54r.net will have most of the info you could want.
$40/20, crap. That's almost as much for a can as I'm thinking about asking for my complete rifle with a sealed can of ammo. I need to rethink my rifles value.....
