I was wondering what engine you guys think is more reliable? They both been out now for a while. Without being bias which engine with the same proper care will last longer or has a better track record for longevity?

They’re on par with one another. The gr has the advantage of having a timing chain that almost never fails, but the VZ is just old school engine. Nothing to fancy. I’ve seen plenty of each with over 300k come into the dealer

I've had both of these V6's twice. went from a 2001 VZ to the 2009 GR then the 2012 GR and BACK to the VZ In my current 2003. All of them had over 120,000 miles when I got them. I wouldn't mind having that 4.0 in the 1st gen taco

Guess they are both equal but better than the 3rd gen?

If you consider “better” in terms of simplicity, yes.
However, the 2GR is not a bad engine. It’s just a lot more complicated than the previous Gens.
The whole truck is more complicated, modules for every thing.

only issue with the 5vz is the iron block and aluminum heads which can pose headgasket issues if not heated up nicely. Other than that, both damned bullet proof engines.

My previous truck, a 1998 T-100, had the 5VZFE, 3.4L engine in it. It was a lack luster engine but was a good one. I sold it to my nephew (way too cheap, lol) with about 276,000 miles on it. I'd just changed the timing belt and water pump for the third time in it's life and he drove it a couple of days after that from southern Illinois, to Des Moines, Iowa. He's still driving it and last I'd heard, it had a little over 320,000 miles on it and was still going strong. As far as I know, it doesn't use any oil to speak of. They are good engines.
I'll have a better answer for you on the 4.0 in another ten years.

From my experience the GRFE had better fuel efficiency as well

    Both are rock solid.

Simply the 1GR has the advantage due to being more modern.

That said the 5vz has more failing points that the 1gr doesn't suffer from.

I've never changed a MAF, injector or ignitor on a gr. Quite a few on vz's.

Early GR headgasket issues exist, I’ve replaced a fair few of injectors at work. I’ve done 2 timing chains (due to neglect, not a normal failure), timing cover leaks (not fun) MAF failure on any modern Toyota is indeed rare now.

All things considered routine maintenance ona. 5vz is more due to the t belt. But past that i truely believe these are on the same level of reliability.

the 2gr-fks in the new tacos is proving to be reliable too. But it’s got so much more extra shit tacked on that it’ll never be as reliable as the 5vz or 1gr. The 1gr by 2gr standards is like an antique

1GR has a chain. Do your oil changes and it lasts.
    5VZ has a million belts

3.4 is less liters than 4. More liters is more power.
