Recently a knocking sound has developed in my steering linkage. Today I investigated and found that one of my not-that-old tie rods is shot.

I replaced the inner and outer tie rods with Moog parts purchased from Amazon in January 2014:

    Outers:
    Moog ES3545
    Moog ES3546

    Inner:
    Moog EV433

I received two very different outer tie rods. One was stamped with '555' and the other was not. The non-555 version has a zerk grease port on the joint. This non-555 tie rod is absolutely wasted. I have given it a bit of grease now and then, but perhaps I was not as good about this as I should have been. The 555 version, which has no grease port, is fine and has no play.

Both inner tie rods are shot. The parts all have 40k miles on them.

Bottom line - make sure your tie rods are stamped with '555' and send them back if they are not.

It just reaffirms that Moog just re-boxes shit from the lowest bidder. The end user is quality control
