Wow. These are really cool. My grandfather had a model railroad set up in the basement. He tinkered with it pretty much daily for 30 years. Periodically he'd say he was going to rip the whole thing out and get rid of it all but we all knew he never would. He re-created the harbor and docks area of his (and my dad's) hometown on Lake Erie, complete with working huletts to remove "iron ore" from cargo holds in ships modeled after real ships that worked on the Great Lakes, load it into box cars, and take it across the yard. The cars went into a lift and the "ore" was unloaded by the lift turning the car upside down. It was an impressive setup, and it was featured in some model railroad magazines. After he passed away we donated it to the local maritime and railroad museum, and they tinker with the display almost as much as he did, upgrading the electric systems he used (I'm amazed he never burned the house down with his Frankenstein-esque electrical work) and making it more historically accurate.

This is an awesome thread, and brings back lots of cool memories.

    Beth:
Model Railroading is still alive and well. The cost to dabble in the hobby can get quite high depending on the scale and the level of realism you would like to acheive.

I know it can get pricey, I've seen the prices on some of the engines and cars he had! I didn't mean that model railroading was at all a thing of the past. In fact, I think this will be the first summer the museum has the entire railroad displayed. It was only a couple years ago tht we donated it (and the museum is only open about half the year anyway). Seems like its a much more popular hobby in the northeast, don't see much of it out west.

Higher density of real railroads and almost every family had at least one reletave working for a railroad back here in the east. I had an uncle that worked for the B&O and a cousin that worked for the Pennsy, I still have a cousin that works for Amtrak.

I collect V&T HO and N gauge rolling stock and engines.

The "new" V&T rolls right by my house on weekends and holidays on excursion trips, they use a diesel and an old oil fired steamer,
