Heyo I just wanted to get some ideas of mods to do for my daily 2012 Tacoma prerunner. Has the 4 cylinder so there isn’t anything performance I’m after. May do a k&n filter because I don’t want my rewards points from autozone to go to waste. Also may do a magnaflow muffler because why not. I’m not really looking to lift the truck because it’s 2wd so there’s no point.

Dingle balls across the top of the windshield are always in fashion... Maybe a big rake and fatties on the back?

I would say forget the K&N filter. They are crap at filtration compared to paper filter. If you want to keep the truck running longer stick with paper filters.

I would say that even a 1 or 2 inch level will make the truck look nice especially as it gets rid of the rake. Extra clearance when changing out the oil makes it easier.

I should probably get rid of the filter then. Maybe a leveling kit may be a nice mod, I did always wanted to drive through dirt roads, seems like fun. Just no overlanding because I’ll probably die somewhere in a mountain.

rewards points can buy a normal filter

K&N has a very well known reputation for being oiled (bad, why would you want oil coming into your intake tract) and ruining MAF sensors
but, if that is what you're looking for, Autozone will certainly be able to get one

there really isn't a problem with stock filters
and a factory Tacoma engine is going to be slow regardless of what filter is on it

you can even keep a filter clean by putting a snorkel with skylone pre-cleaner, or maybe even cowl induction mod
to relocate the inlet out of wheel arch (dirt and dust headquarters)

I just bought a cleaning kit for my stock TRD OR K&N style filter -- should I have just bought a new paper filter?

I have seen a few threads on the K&N filter running fine for 50k miles or whatever then, when the filter is re-oiled per K&N instructions users start having mass air flow (MAF) sensor issues because the oil gets on the very fine wire of the MAF sensor and causes problems. Do your due diligence before K&N engine air filter. Some go with WIX in the engine compartment and K&N in the cab to avoid MAF sensor issues. Not sure if this impacts your 2nd Gen 4 banger like it does the 3rd Gen V6s so I may be muddying the waters here. Something to check.

had the filter for about 1,500 miles, haven’t noticed anything negative. Will keep taking note of things but I can kind of feel the small extra torque. Next week I’m going to be ordering some all terrain tires because the ones I have right now are all season, barely any tread left and there’s a nail stuck in one of the tires so it gives me the excuse of upgrading. I’m also curious if there are any trails I can go to near Los Angeles or somewhere in California where I can have some fun with the truck without worrying about getting stuck in a ditch.

King 25001-119A, JBA HC and superbumps, EL095 leafs with longer overload leaf removed and 2 degree shim, Bilstein 5160 rears with fox roost shield on passenger side, King 2'' bump stops, B&M 70264 trans cooler, CSF FJ radiator, Leer Trilogy X2T bed cover, Scangauge, 34R AGM battery, weathertech floormats, Gold plug on the differential, fancy engine and diff oils, UNI air injection filter mod, Factory antenna chopped 4'', De-badged, Ram mount on A pillar, Cooper ST Maxx 265/75 R16.
I'd get ceramic tint (doesn't have to be dark), sound deadening and upgraded sound system. Good tires, battery, take care of the paint. Don't waste money on performance anything, it won't work.

K&N filters are trash, I've seen that oily mess take out more than one motor. Get good paper filters

Tint is on my list, sound system isn’t something I won’t be doing for sometime because this is my daily.

I’ll probably just grab a paper one in the morning, do you recommend a brand?
