Couple other options for my rear grab bar idea. (OP let me know if you would like this someplace else other than this thread.)

I've had the idea of putting something in the back for double-cab passengers as well but I never thought of putting it up high on the grab handle as my thoughts were that it would be right over their heads and would be uncomfortable to look at. Using the parts that I've listed here would certainly work but I don't think it would look as clean as the bolt covers for the rear handles on 2nd gens are the fold over type that are attached to the handle itself.

Picture I had placed into another mod thread I have. I need to get back to my RAM Mounts catalog again but I was thinking of using a RAM Tough-Claw or a RAM rail base ball on one of the front seat headrest posts. I have never measured the diameter of one of those posts but I think it would be a bit more convenient as the back seat passenger wouldn't have to strain their neck.

Still, it's a cool idea to sort out as it's frustrating trying to pick up a tablet that the boy has dropped onto the floor when he fell asleep in his booster seat. I'm looking forward to reading about your solution.

I think RAM Mount has all the right items to make it work.
Are those visors in the pic above? Do they attach behind the handle?
Was thinking to do one of the mounts that I posted pics of above like that, from behind the bar.
May work. Will be a work in progress.

They are visors from an FJ Cruiser. Check my signature for part numbers and a brief write up.

I'm excited to see your solution, I know that if TacomaWorld puts their collective heads together we can come up with an inexpensive, safe, and easy to use solution.

Oh yeah! Damn, I forgot about those.

I may order the two ball mounts to see which is best to use and go from there.

Came across these at my house while looking for bolts for something else. If they are the right size I'll have 6 extras after I use one if anyone cares..............still waiting on 2 of the 3 parts to show up to do this mod.

Me too. I ordered all my parts from eBay so they're coming from different sources. Only paid $43 (shipped) for everything as opposed to $66.67 if ordered from RAM.

Same here but thought 2 of mine were from same place. IIRC, all 3 = $42 shipped. +2 on the higher prices seen on RAM site even before adding shipping. And that was comparing composite to composite & metal to metal prices in both places. Metal pieces are a bit more in both places.

I have a great hardware store here, if people can't find that bolt size.
I know that they can be found online, but just in case.

If anyone in the Tidewater/Virginia Beach area is doing this mod and needs the bolt, I've got 9 more laying in the garage. Shoot me a PM. I couldn't find them locally and my vendor had to order a bag of ten.

I was expecting the rest of my parts today in the mail, but the postman didn't deliver because of the snow storm. I can't get pissed off because I'm a UPS man and I called-out myself!:bananadance:

Any concern with air bag deployment with this mod?

I've done this mod a couple years ago and not too concerned about side airbag. If you watch a crash test of a 2nd gen Tacoma you will see the A-pillar stays in place when deployed.

Only thing I'm concerned about is in a head on collision the drivers left hand can potentially shoot forward from the wheel toward the windshield (can also be seen in crash tests) thus a hand into a GPS or phone or whatever may heart like a motherfucker but maybe no different than a hand into a windshield, probably be broken regardless.

I went with the RAM double socket swivel. It pushes the further away from the wheel. Although it blocks a bit more windshield view, it really isn't noticeable.
