Hello all. I own a 2017 tacoma TRD 4x4 Off Road. I have a question for you. I have been told to use Genuine Toyoto API SN SAE 0W-20 Motor oil with oil grade ILSAC GF-5 for oil changes. However, my service department uses bulk Mobil 1 synthetic.

    1. Is the Mobil 1 used for oil changes compatible with Genuine Toyota motor oil.
    2. Is the Mobil 1 oil SAE 0W-20 and ILSAC GF-5 specs as recommended by Toyota?
    2. Is it safe to switch from Genuine Toyota Motor oil to the Mobil 1 Synthetic?
    3. It appears the Mobil 1 synthetic oil is a little cheaper then the Genuine Toyota synthetic.
Can I purchase the Mobil 1 Synthetic oil at a parts store if in fact it is compatible and OK to
    use?
    4. There are many types of Mobil 1 synthetic oils. Which type is best for my Tacoma.

I just want to make sure that I am doing what is right for my Tacoma without causing any harm. You advise and knowledge is important and means alot. And I do not want to mess with my warranty.

Awaiting your response and thank you in advance.

    Lou Pecek
Owner of a 2017 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Off Road.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. It's fine. You are over thinking this. Go buy it on sale at Walmart.

Supertech is just fine for these trucks. Your information is misleading. Plenty of real world results would tell you that Supertech is actually fantastic for our vehicles, and most vehicles for that matter.

Yup. People hate on Supertech, but it's made by Warren who makes nearly all of the store brands...

Guy down the block with almost 400k between 2 3rd gens has all the bragging rights. He uses Supertech in the engine and diffs and has had zero issues. About 7kish intervals towing and hauling on a daily basis in the southwest. I think that pretty much speaks for itself

Im no oil expert, but after all of the oil threads, ive come to the conclusion that we drive trucks and not sport cars so we can throw any brand in there as long as its the right consistancy.

Hey it’s rated and works just fine for normal intervals. For me changing it every 5k, I’m not going to spend more on an oil to get a few thousand more out of it.

OP: If it’s rated and meets Toyota’s specs, most any 0w-20 should be fine for normal intervals. If you’re dead set on doing 10k intervals, a higher quality 0w-20 would be best. Toyota and Mobil 1 spec very similar on paper, and will both be fine for long intervals with an OEM or quality filter. These trucks aren’t that hard on oil to begin with.

I told him the same thing, but funny enough he spends too much time on the roads and running his business to keep up online, and when he’s barely home he’s got his family and house. Busy but real down to earth dude. I’ll see if he can let me snap a pic of his contractor truck Tacoma and the odometer next time I see him.

I use the Mobil 1 advance fuel economy 0w20 from Walmart. I change mine every 5000miles with an oem Toyota filter. Any high end brand will do fine. Amsoil is probably the best , but expensive .

Yes sir before that my fleet was running Service Pro but the source i had for that closed down and the next source for service pro pushes other brands
My trucks ( aside from the wife's taco) make me all my money and make even more when money isn't wasted

Side note I run all the gas trucks 10k and use the silver bottle full synthetic Orielly with a wix XP filter
The super duties I run the Orielly 15w40 with a motorcraft filter and usually right at 12k
When I do buy a major brand oil I always go Castrol for senemential reasons (My grandpop ) used it

The Taco has the Orielly house brand full syn 5w30 with currently a fram orange filter and I will have no fear going 10k normally I use a wix XP filter

The only thing he’s done is added a leaf in the rear and airbags for the contractor canopy/box he has on the back, and when towing his small trailer. Otherwise everything else appears completely stock. He does safety inspections/mitigation and handyman/pest control work for industrial and mining operations in Arizona, Southern California, and Nevada. Kind of a jack of all trades dude they probably hire on to knock out a bunch of stuff at once. So I imagine he sees some light offroading from time to time out at some of the more remote operations.

Use the most expensive oil. Then have it tested after each oil change then panic if it’s well within standards. Or use the cheaper stuff and do the same thing. Then you should feel a vibration in the driveline somewhere. This is the way. I have spoken
