Mirror Adjust Knob Mod

So with my interior almost done, really the only chrome I have left is the Toyota badge on the steering wheel and my mirror adjust knob.

I have a bunch of MESO stuff already, he doesn’t make a black mirror knob. So, I figured I would take it upon myself to come up with a solution.

The good news is that the center of the button (the part that glows when lights are on, pops out easy. I tried to disassemble the rest of the knob but I seem to have run into a problem: the chrome top and the black lower portion seem to be a single piece. Or at least they are plastic welded together.

So, I think I am faced with one of four options:

1. Take the outer knob portion and paint the whole thing black or tape off the bottom portion and paint the chrome part as best as possible.
   
2. Try and wrap the chrome part in a tiny piece of vinyl.
   
3. 3D print a new piece.
   
4. 3D print a cover like MESO does for his shifter bezel chrome delete part.

Each seems to have draw backs. The first is that pain sucks and it’s easy to make it look like poo. The second deals with trying to wrap a small piece of vinyl around a tiny part with not a lot of surface area. The third doesn’t seem feasible because the inside of the button seems pretty intricate. The fourth doesn’t seem feasible because there’s almost no gap between the center button and outer ring. No idea how to secure it and make it look good.

There is a version of the switch from Toyota without the chrome if you want to spend the bucks and do it the right way lol

I can't seem to find a picture of the switch with or without the chrome and the parts site shows fitment on all the 3rd gen...

My 2018 had chrome, my 2020 doesn't, so perhaps "Supersession(s): 84872-0E020" is the non-chrome...

Live with it. Or, I don't think vinyl would be that hard. Have someone cut u 5 pieces for like 60 cents. You're bound to get it in 5 tries.

I got one from a Sienna off eBay for $25 a while back. It’s backlit blue as well

Has there been any updated products regarding blacking out the mirror adjust knob? This is one of the last things of chrome in my cab as well....

 

Wrap the bottom in some black wire heat shrink. Some other member here did it, can't find the thread though.

 

The cleanest, easiest way is to just replace it with one from a Prius.

I bought one on eBay for ~$23, then realized I could have have just swapped mine with the one in my daughter’s Prius.

Just tape the black knurled part and paint the chrome. Taking it apart is the toughest part. I did the awhile back with flat enamel black rustoleum in a can and you would never know. It cost me all of a few bucks and even if you look at it super close you would never know it wasn’t factory.

 

Mine came from a 2017.
Not sure what other years have it.
