    Just curious.

Like in my old Chevy I could expect to get about 30 miles (after fuel light Came on) before I ran completely out.

What about the Tacoma 2013 v6 tx ed. ?

Your answer lies in the owners manual. I don't remember out of top of my head, but I know I saw it in there awhile back.

As many as it takes to get to a gas station.

Have been forced to run like 35 miles after light, sweating looking for station in unfamiliar area.
    Made it.

pretty sure you've got about 2.5 or 3 gal left when the light comes on i've got a 13 trd sport and sweating to death and made it 50+ miles after light on hwy
although wouldn't advise pushing it that close cause if i remember right it took like 20.5 gal or so to fill it up and they are like 21.1 gal tanks

I've got over 60 miles a few times. Best way to check, as soon a your light comes on, fill up, subtract the gallons from overall tank capacity, multiply that number by your MPGs and that will be your answer.

From my observation, its roughly <4 gallons of gas remaining once the needle gets to that 1/8" space away from E, both in my truck and my 3rd gen Rav4. Tacoma has a 21 gallon tank, Rav4 has a 16 gallon tank...Tacoma fills up about 16-17 gallons when I let it get low, Rav4 takes 12+ gallons when the light comes on.

IMO, Toyota does the fuel gauge smart...make you think your are using less fuel than you really are when there is greater than 1/2 tank, then make you realize you really are using gas when there is < 1/2 tank . Its not like this with other manufacturers.

I have refueled several time almost immediately after the light comes on and I consistently put in about 17 gallons, leaving right around 4 left in the tank. With a conservative estimate of 12mpg (I know I get more) I expect to make it ~50 miles without any issues. Not really good to run them down that low though.

I ran 31 miles after the light came on and put in 18.5 gallons yesterday. Makes me think it comes on around the 17 gallon mark or so.

Does anybody know how much gas you need to leave in the tank to keep the fuel pump cooled?

None, the pump is cooled by the fuel running through it, not the fuel it is immersed in. You would need to keep the tank 3/4 full at all times if that was the case.

I can (And regularly do) drive about 60 miles after the light turns on. this was the same as my 99' 4runner, they "reserve" is much larger than a GM

Talking about fuel pumps, I have always been told not to let the fuel get so low that the light comes on as the pump is sucking up bottom debri and it affects the longevity of the pump.

I have not tried that yet, don't plan on doing so.
When I reach just below a 1/4 tank, I'm at the gas station.

Doesn't make sense - the tank pickup is fixed at/near the bottom of the tank, so it wouldn't make any difference on picking up bottom debris whether the tank was full or almost empty. Also, pump is cooled by gas flowing thru it, not from pump being immersed in fuel.

BTW, on a long trip, especially when I will be driving over 50 miles after a fillup, I will fill my truck to the very top. Am able consistently to put in 2.5 gallons after the filler clicks off (slow process, and I only do on a road trip). No codes or problems in 47,000 miles. Have put 21 or more gallons in the tank several times. I also did this deliberately to initially calibrate my ScanGauge to set the fuel used adjustment factor, since the variances between pump pressure, whether or not someone else is using the other side of the pump, whether or not the ground at the pump is flat, phase of the moon (kidding) all make an accurate "fill" a crap-shoot anyway.

One last thing - manual does NOT address how much gas is left when the light comes on, at least not in my 09 manual.

One other thing, if you have a ScanGauge, recalibrate distance about every 10-15,000 miles to correct for tire wear, which keeps your SG speed and mpg more accurate. Replacing worn tires with new gained a full inch in diameter, took about a 5% adjustment.
