Hey everyone, I'm looking for pictures of your first gen xtra-cabs, 6.5ft bed with mid or high-rise camper shells. Just want to see how they look on this truck.

    Examples:
    • Leer 122.
    • Snugtop Hi-liner (mid rise).
    • A.R.E. TW.
    • Protops model 100 or 300.
Any photos would be greatly appreciated.

I've done a bunch of research and calling around on most of the models you listed... here's what I know:

    Leer 122:
    Tallest height
    Still available new
Why I didn't buy one: No option for vented windoors, $5k price new

    Snug top Hi-liner:
No longer available for 1st gens

    ARE TW:
No longer available for 1st gens

    What I finally went with:
    ARE MX w/ vented windoors

So far I have been happy with my MX. I do wish I had the extra height of a true high-rise but the mid-rise still provides much more space than my previous cab-hi. Also the vented windoors were a must for me. I would highly recommend them if you plan on camping in the topper. They are worth every overpriced penny.

Here are some pictures of both of my MX's (Long story why I have two... :anonymous:)
FWIW the matte black one is sitting in my garage and will be for sale soon. I'd be happy to cut a deal for a TW member if you're interested.

Looks great! I agree that the windoors are a must-have. I also didn't know they still made the Leer 122, but wow, that would be a high price to pay and not get the windows you want.

Not sure if you have considered it, but a having a contractor cap is really great for camping and life in general. See below for pics:

I have tried to go this route, but they seem to be even harder to find used than a high top fiberglass. How much does yours weigh?

Not really sure but I can take it off and put it on myself by balancing it on my back. I would bet it’s comparable or lighter than the fiberglass ones, it’s made out of aluminum.

Practicality wise, you're 100% correct. But visually/fit wise, I feel like they only work well on the single cabs... The rear angle of the extended cab leaves too much of a gap for my preference. I wish Toyota left the back of the cab vertical on all models.

So mine is actually for an extended cab, see this angle. The fitment looked good on the truck of guy that I bought it from.

It's in the first post in that thread: 3M Super 90 Spray Adhesive (2 cans): https://www.lowes.com/pd/3M-17-6-fl-oz-Bonding-Clear-Multipurpose-Adhesive/1160531

So far so good, nothing has started to fall off or deteriorate. The original carpet was falling apart when I got the topper, so the same will most likely happen in another 10-15 years.

Dang, I stand corrected!! All the utility toppers I have seen have a vertical front face... now I'm regretting not holding out for one like yours, thanks a bunch lol

To be fair to you, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another one like this in person.

Found the photo of the shell on the truck of the guy I bought it from. There are boxes on both sides, which is super handy. I could probably take one off easily if I wanted a pass through. He was a seasonal wildland firefighter if I recall correctly.

If you ever get up to the PNW, let me know and I’d be happy to trade with you for my extended cab contracor cap.
