Metal shavings in oil....should I be concerned?

Hey all! I have a 2020 TRD Sport, and just changed my oil at a 5,000 mile interval. This is the second oil change I’ve done on my truck. It has just under 10k miles.

I couldn’t help but notice the glitter, and what I can sadly assume is, metal shavings in the used oil..

My question is: Should I be concerned? Could the truck still be “breaking in” and this might be expected? TIA!

Changed mine at 2k to look for issues just like this. Following this thread now, as I plan to change it again at 5k as well. What oil brand/weight did you use when you did the first change?

Edit to add: I changed mine at 2k as a research thing and sent a sample to Blackstone labs. I had no reason to do so other than curiosity. I did not have any metal shavings visible when I performed the oil change.

No. Worry about something else, like life and family. These engines go for a long time. Change at 10K and move on.

I went with Mobil1 Full Synthetic 0W-20 (with an OEM filter from Toyota), because I overheard the parts manager at my local dealer ship say “if you don’t run Toyota brand oil I recommend Mobil 1”. So I was like...ok, why not?

Use Toyota oil and forget it except every 10K. You will be fine. Don't overthink it.

New engine. Not uncommon to see shavings on the first oil change. That is why every manufacturer suggests it be done at an earlier interval than all the rest.

Normal. The next change you'll likely see fewer shavings if any at all.

I also use Mobil-1 and OEM filters in my Taco and my GF's Highlander. It's good stuff!

You do not need to do a “break-in” oil change on a modern engine. Doesn’t mention anything like that in the manual, not sure where you got this from.

    In the 70s-80s, sure.

Nope. Mobil 1 is just another "also ran" these days. There's nothing special about it.

Pennzoil Pure Platinum is the undisputed king of synthetics. Not that it's necessary. Any synthetic of the correct weight is sufficient.

Some of that doesnt look like metal to me. How clean was your drain pan amd the area om the truck around the drain plug when you started draining it.

It’s normal! I changed my oil in my 2020 4Runner 3k and filter was full of metal shavings. Changed it at 7k and there was nothing trapped in the filter. I expect to find metal flakes in my filter on my 2021 Tacoma when I change the oil.
