    Hi All,

First time poster and just wanted to introduce myself...with a problem. Just bought a 2013 Tacoma, it has 850 miles on it and I already put a scratch on it when I was putting the dog crate into the bed. It wasn't severely deep except on one end so I decided to use Meguiar’s Scratch X 2.0 based off of some other posts. I cleaned the area, applied the scratch remover going in different angles using a microfiber cloth. I wiped it down to see some progress and it seemed to work okay. I started going a little harder towards the bottom of the scratch where it was deeper and then I saw that a blemish appeared, it got a bit bigger and now I kind of freaked out as to what happened. Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Looks like you may have burned thru your clear & base a bit. From the pic, it looks like you can see the various layers of paint. Were you using a machine? If it is burned thru, it's not something you can fix easily. It'll require a paint/bodyshop respray base/clear. Hope it's just the pic that makes it look like that. GL bro.

that scratch is definitely too deep for any Polish to remove and it does look like you went through the clear.

Scratch X > Scratch X again > Polish > Polish again > Wax . Also don't use the same applicator pad as you reduce . If its still there, spot wash with Dawn and repeat.

Scratch X is basically a safer (or a beginners) cutting compound for small spot areas. Just used it by hand a few weeks ago to remove move clear coat scuffs from some low class bozo or bitch who lightly backed into my wife's rav4 bumper at the grocery store and didn't leave any info. It polishes and blends the clear coat, but any scratches below clear and into the paint, or in my case, plastic scrapes are going to need an advanced sanding and refinish.

I also used it last summer to remove some scrapes from my tailgate. You can't even tell it was scratched. Stuff works pretty well for its purpose in my opinion.

I'm pretty inexperienced with any of this and it sounds like I should play it safe and get it professionally fixed. I didn't realize the meguiar's was that strong or that I was rubbing that hard. I didn't polish it either and I'm guessing that won't help at this stage. The visible scratch on the pic is only about an inch long, hopefully it's not going to cost too much

So this is an ancient thread, but the same thing just happened to my brand new MGM. Anyone know if this size spot would require a full door repaint, or just a spot paint?

There are places that will do spot paint repairs. Prep a small area, blow in some Color, blend out the clear, and polish the blends. They typically look good for a few months if you’re lucky, but eventually fail. Dealers do these kind of repairs to make vehicles look good on the lot.

NO! Germans always over engineer everything. Just have your local body shop fix it or rub a little wax on it and live with it.
30 years ago, I had a '65 Nova that I spent about a year restoring. It was my daily driver. While I was in college, I got a door ding in it one day. I was pissed. I stewed over that ding for a couple of weeks, then New Year Eve, 1990, I smacked a big Oak tree with that car and totaled it out. I wanted that door ding back......
If it were me, I'd just live with it for now.
But, you may not be able to....

I know that the horse has already left the barn, but for a deeper scracth like this next time, i would gp the toothpick applied touch-up paint. Not perfect, but with a steady hand, can look acceptible, and as you get other wear and tear, more acceptable by the day. There are many good products out there, but with limitations.
