This is my first new vehicle since 2001. The new tech is almost overwhelming. I was curious what would happen if the key fob battery was dead and the truck was locked. I found out about the little mechanical key, in the fob, from the manual. I was curious, so I went out to the garage and unlocked the door with the mechanical key. This activated the alarm. Is this normal? Is there a way to not set off the alarm? I can’t seem to find anything in manual about this.

^Been normal on Toyotas with keyless entry since 1990s.

If you lock the door with the mechanical key, the alarm won't be armed and subsequent unlocking with the key won't set off the alarm, as per page 599 of your owner's manual:

If your fob battery is dead you wouldn’t have a way to turn the alarm off?

^Been this way for 30 years. :notsure:

Nowadays when you shut off the engine, the truck shows a warning message in the gauge cluster if your fob battery is low. Been this way for 8 years in Tacomas. Replace the fob battery when you see the message.

This is not true. It still sets off the alarm. You have to jump in and find your FOB to turn it off.

This is fairly new for Toyotas that it is turned off by default to disarm from the mechanical key in the door. On some 23-24 Toyotas the dealer can turn this feature on with their scanner on others it is grayed out and doesn't seem to able to turn on at the moment. Try contacting the dealer the option is called disarm from mechanical key or something close to that in the security section.
