I am planning to head over to maze district end of may, was wondering if anyone done it anything to watch out for, i done few trails in utah already like fin/things etc, white rim, how different is this, and is it ok for tacoma, or heavy duty jeep trail. and if you done it, whats the best way to enter it and leave it, i was thinking coming from highway 95 side or is it better go from ranger station from hans flats?

also any good suggestions for camp sites, i saw they have ekker and milard next to river, is that doable to reach in day? i am thinking spending 2 day there. is it enough etc? also i assume full fuel tank should be enough maybe spare 5gal should be good enough.

looking for some input. my rig is setup for overland and can definaly stay off grid for about 5-6 days.

also end of may good time to go, or already insane hot and bad?

MUST hike from Overlook to the Harvest Scene, one of the best hikes/scrambles I've ever done.

We only spent two nights there, but I want to go back. Take you time and get it some hikes and explore. We went at the end of May, it was pretty hot, but not unbearable. Make sure you're on top of the permit system, guessing the good spots are already reserved for that time.

Both are up there with the best campsites I've been to.

The drive to Elker and Millard is LONG. Elker isn't too bad but the site is NOT by the river. Is on the edge of a cliff, basically this one:

[IMG]ImpromptU-Ah!-82.jpg by Monte Nickles Photos, on Flickr

Just on the right side a ways.

Millard is on the river and is nice. But it is a freaking long drive. If you get going at a good clip you can make it there in a day from Hans Flat no problem. I drove from High Spur to there. But you are DONE driving by the time you get there. Bumpy road.

The Doll House is the best site there IMO. But Panorama point, the Overlook, and High Spur are pretty awesome as well. The Doll house is the "hardest" trail there and its not bad in a tacoma. You shouldn't have problems.

I have some pretty good trip reports of the Maze, been there twice with a ton of photos:

This was the first time: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-m-u-d-trip-report-1000-miles-of-utah-dirt.476285/

The Maze is towards the end if you don't want to read the rest. We went to the Overlook and the Dollhouse on that trip.

This trip we did Hight spur and Millard. Plus we did the hike in Horseshoe canyon which i'd highly recomend as well.

Either way, the biggest thing if you are going a lone is to be well prepared. It is VERY remote and you'll see next to no one. Take at least 10gal of gas extra and lots of water. Its an and amazing place.

    Don't sweat it too much.

My second trip I missed the ranger station by 30mins. They close at 4:30 i believe. We just went and camped at High spur as we had planned and stopped on the way back to check it.

If you print of your receipt as well you can show it to the rangers if you meet one on the south end and never get to the station. They have a copy of everyone that should be there and you'll have proof of purchase and you'll be good.

My permit was emailed to me.

We were stopped by a ranger on the way out of the Maze Overlook and she asked to see our permit.

I think they stopped doing that. Our first trip we had our permit. But my second one they never sent us one. :notsure:

Just said to save the receipt.

Is their anyway to get to Moab from or through Canyonlands besides going up North to HWY 70. My trip is coming from Peekaboo through Capitol Reef from the West to Canyonlands park. I have a couple roads planned out on the East Side of Canyonlands but didn't see anyway to get across or up north besides going up to HWY 70 and back around.

Either up through 70 or down south past Hite on 95. There's no other way to cross the river in between those two.

Which way would be better seeing? My route planned right now is a road called 1010, I believe (west side to up north to hwy 70) up the west side of the Canyon. That path you all are talking about close to Hans station possibly

Nope. There are no bridges that cross the rivers in canyonlands, you either have to go way far north or way farther south to get around.
