I’ve got a lift and larger tires going on at separate places. I’d like to throw the tires on first so when the lift is done, it’s done. Is it possible to drive a Tacoma Sport pre lift with the larger tires on already to the shop putting the lift? LT285 /70 R17 Is what I’m going with. I just don’t want to damage anything so just curious if this can be done.

    Thanks.

265/70/70. Probably won't rub, but some do. If it does, look up tacoma fender trimming

Lots of rubbing is in your future. Drive straight and don't turn.

Also, 285s on stock wheels will most likely rub your upper control arms. Spacers or different wheels will be needed to avoid that.

Should have read the whole thing lol. Don't put them on until after your lift. Even after that you'll rub

I appreciate this info. I’m a little confused on why stock wheels will cause this but new wheels wouldn’t?

I’m definitely waiting till after lifted to put the tires on. Thank you. But now I’m considering buying new wheels that I was hoping to avoid. Will you help me understand why new wheels will help with rubbing after a lift? Thanks again!

New wheels can push the tire/wheel assembly further from the upper control arm and so it wont rub on the upper control arm

different wheels have different offset and backspacing

    welcome to TW

Stock wheels dont have enough back spacing and thus, with the wider tire (buldge) will rub the uca. Spacers or different wheel offset will push tire out, away from the uca.

    What he said^

You can also get spacers for like $100 per axle which will push the wheels further away from your upper control arm.

    I’m re thinking everything.

I’m putting a 3 inch lift on and was hoping to be just under 33’s.

I’d prefer no rubbing. Is their a wheel and tire combo size that would get me there without rubbing issues after my lift is on? What is the recommend wheel/tire combo size for making sure to not have this issue after the lift?

There’s no guarantee. It really comes down to an awesome alignment as well.

    Shoot for 3.75 - 4.3 BS

265/70-17 is your best bet for tire size without rubbing.

255/85/16 on stock wheels is another way to get to a 33 with no rubbing

    That will rub.

If you are considering any tire size with any wheel offset/back spacing - I guarantee there are dozens of others who have already tried that combination and posted about it on TW.

My biggest piece of advice is, don't rush into it. Give yourself at least 2 weeks to read about different tire/wheel combinations. You are making a 4 figure purchase that you're going to have to live with (and hopefully be happy with) for several years so you want to explore all the options first.
