I’ve got a 2001 Tacoma 3.4 2wd auto. I just installed a magnuson sc with 7th inj kit, cia, 2.2 pulley. I’m trying to hang with my brothers 16 Silverado with the 6.2 chipped putting out well over 400hp. As it stands he can put me back 3 cars by 70mph. If he used launch control that’s more like 5 or 6. I just installed the urd light weight crank pulley today and have a 2.1 pulley in route. I need to open up the exhaust a little by removing secondary cat and possibly installing a magnaflow muffler. I’ll also do some tuning and run a mix of torco. What can this motor handle in stock form? I need 50-75more hp. Don’t think I’m gonna get there. I may just sell this set up and drop in a 5.3 with turbo. Any ideas welcome.

    Wingedone,

Wow, I commend you for your effort of trying to make a 25 year old engineered engine compete with a modern motor that is almost twice as big as the 3.4. You get brownie points from me. So let me get this straight, you are trying to take a stock 3.4 with probably around 140 horsepower at the rear wheels, and make it compete with a Chevrolet 6.2 that is kicking out 400 horsepower, which translates to probably around 325 horsepower at the rear wheels. You are probably better off scraping the project and dropping in the 5.3. The little 3.4 motor is a great motor, but it is completely out classed in this situation.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

Call up LC engineering and have an open mind and wallet, they can get one to 500hp but, please call em, many don’t believe me about that and that topic is a shit show, lmfao. I believe Gadget arrived at 500 also but don’t quote me cause I ain’t said shit. The 5.3 would be cheaper and I’ll buy your intake and charger setup to start your project...

It is absolutely outclassed. Actually I believe stock the 6.2 was 420hp. He’s got cai, tune, exhaust so he’s most likely closer to 460-470 crank lol. Like I said I’m just trying to hang with him up to about 70-80 His truck is a bad ass but it’s big and heavy. I can see the 5.3 happening it’s just a matter of when. For now I’ll install the smaller pulley, tune and open up exhaust and see if I can stay with in 1-2 cars that would be a huge win for a 25 year old engine. :)

This is funny. But on a serious note a turbo and a good tune could atleast get you not beat so bad.

Maybe even win too, but you'll probably only win once and it'll cost you a connecting rod or two.

first of all these trucks are NOT race cars, more like a brick on wheels.

BUT, if you turbocharged the motor, you will beat the Chevy for sure.
Turbo you get the most power while the supercharger you are limited to boost.
Supercharger you get the most reliable easy bolt on power.

The big advantage the Tacoma has is it’s weight is 3400 pounds compared to the Chevy at 5000 pounds.

If you get your engine tuned to a 2” pulley like mine you might beat it.

My setup I Cancun neck and neck with a new Subaru WRX and the new turbo Ford Raptor,
The new Tacoma and 4runner are both an easy easy pass.

If your brothers truck can out run a WRX or a New Ford Raptor easily then there’s no hope with the supercharger for the Tacoma.

It’s all about the power to weight ratio that tell you the numbers.

After porting my supercharger I am probably at about 275 at the rear wheel, need to do a new another dyno after a ECU reset as my last test was right around 250 rear wheel.

A ECU reset is needed after ANY motor upgrade!!!!

    So 275 / 3400 = 12.3 pounds per horse for the Tacoma

Let say the Chevy has 350 rear wheel horses as we don’t really know.

    350 / 5000 = 14.2 pounds per horse

But the Chevy has a 10 speed transmission? So it would be close for you with an automatic as they are slower.

So if you did all of these below maybe 1000.00 - 2000.00 depending
    1) get 2” pulley 100.00
    2) tune for the 2” pulley. ??
    3) methonal kit would definitely help 400.00
    4) have supercharger ported. 400.00-500.00
    5) headers. 500-1000
    6) throttle body ported. 150.00
    7) cat back
    8) boost AFR guage

TRD supercharger is maxed out around 250-300 rear wheel horses
You might be ahead of him and still this setup works fine for a daily driver,
But you don’t really know what power the Chevy is pulling down.
Just ask him how his truck compares to a new Raptor or new WRX.

Lol This is all about two brothers talking shit. Hell my explorer sport would prolly beat it or at least be right with it up to 140+. Yes his truck can do 140. I just can’t believe that a sc’d v6 running close to 10psi that weighs 1500-2000lbs less couldn’t hang. I don’t believe it wil ever beat it but just to hang with it would be sweet. His trucks beats raptors, chargers, rams all the damn time. Time will tell. I have a vid of the last time we ran. just can’t figure out how to upload it. He had a passenger and a small atv in bed lol.

OP, perhaps a few "strategically placed Al-Gore-modified windmills' can increase it to what you need for speed :notsure:

^^ on this note, what kind of tires are you running @wingedone? Are they heavy E rated all terrains?

If speed and times are your thing, heavy wheels/tires are what kills you on these trucks especially. Throw on some lightweight street tires and I bet you see a big difference, highly doubt it'll be enough to keep up with your brother but it should help.

    AHEM Excuse Me...

DON'T U KNOW THE 1ST GEN TACOMA ONLY PUTS OUT 140HP STOCK, WHILE THE SILVER ADO IS NEW AND PUTS OUT 400????? HOW ARE U EVER GONNA COMPLETE WITH THAT???
NOW PLEASE PROMPTLY DELETE YOUR COMPUTER...

I vote Looking into weight reduction, optimize for tire performance, take the bed off, take unnecessary equipment out

Genuinely curious. Did you miss the supercharger? He atleast got a little potential if he tunes or somethin.

Wasn't being serious lol but yea I read he has a supercharger

The Silverado makes more horse power but it's also 2,000 lbs heavier
OP was looking for ideas to keep up with his brother; weight reduction came to mind. This will increase HP to weight ratio against his brother's silverado.
Also P rated tires are much lighter than E rated tires. And that added 'rotational' mass from an E rated tire decreases acceleration A LOT.
Would also consider 31" over 33" tires for torque

pretty sure my wife's 4cyl Corolla makes more than 140hp, lol

The 3.4's are more like 190 stock, the SC boosts it to like 240-250, iirc. Not exactly a powerhouse, but the Silverados also weigh like 1500# more than a Taco.

I wouldn't take the bed off either, unless you want even less traction on your starts...
